I've had my camera for about a month and have been testing it extensive. Overall, I'm thrilled with the jaw dropping image quality, and the workmanship of the product. The Red One is an incredible value, and I don't expect the need to purchase another camera for several years. It's that good.
I just had my first shoot which was a commercial last Friday. Before the shoot, I tested playback from the Red Drive on release build 15 and it consistantly locked up the camera. I would then have to disconnect the battery and completely re-boot. It was obvious that this would not go over well on a large commercial produciton.
During the shoot we recorded the 720 output to an AJA ioHD into Final Cut as a workaround. With twenty clients in the room and the first time out with the camera, this was the only way to make the Red a viable tool within the agency/business demands of the shoot.
Everyone was thrilled with the picture quality, as we reviewed numerous takes in-depth off of the AJA io. It was connected to a large plasma screen which worked out great.
Had I not had the AJA io HD on hand, as well as an assistant recording and playing back the takes, it would have been the last time that I would have been able to use the Red with these clients and the producer. Reviewing takes is critical on a large commercial shoot. I hope this one gets fixed soon. Otherwise working with the camera was a fantastic experience and the shots look absolutely stunning.
After the shoot we created dpx files with Red Cine of selected takes. The multi render went flawlessly since we avoided the Quicktime issue entirely. Today, the client gets a 500 gig drive filled with super-high quality images that were down converted to their exact specs. No deck was need or used in this process. Incredible.
