  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First rate, but reasonably-price audio post professional needed.

Hi all. . .

Here's where we are with our first film, "Works in Progress:"

1. Production: Finished
2. Editing: Finished
3. Color-correction: In process (in Hollywood)
4. Audio post-production: Currently needed

And that's what I'm hoping someone will able to recommend to me: A very accomplished audio post-specialist who can do two things for us: 1) Denoise our dialog tracks, and 2) Create a final stereo mix of the film.

Our brilliant first-time editor (Kevin Harlan) has created the sound design, but he doesn't have the time or tools needed to effectively cancel noise in the dialog tracks or created a normalized, final mix. We need someone else to step in, download our OMF files off of Final Cut, and get cracking on finishing the audio. We hope to have the audio finished inside of two weeks maximum.

We are, of course, looking for a pro, but we are also looking for someone who can do professional quality work at considerably less than full rates.

Our noise issues are two-fold, occasional booms from errant wind currents that could not be defeated by zeppelins, and, more importantly, air handler and related broadband noise that resulted from shooting in locations where we were unable to turn off said offenders.

We found a wonderful colorist for the video side of things here on REDUser, so now I'm hopeful that someone can recommend someone with the tools, time, and talents to finish the audio. We thought we had found a local house here in Kansas City to do the work, but the "treated" (and I do use that word loosely) tracks sounded measurably worse than our OMF originals. We need someone who is a specialist in dialog restoration and improvement.

About the film:

"Works in Progress" is a poignant, PG-rated romantic comedy. It was shot using two RED One cameras and features exceptionally strong acting, editing, and cinematography and a wonderfully witty and original script. The film was almost entirely funded out of our own pockets.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much.

Stephen

Are you still looking? Can you provide a sample track? Can you also PM me a ballpark figure of how much you have in your budget to spend on this?

Thanks!

Stephen, one really would have to listen to samples to be able to make educated guess about a) the chances of restoring and b) the effort involved. There are certain things on cannot change besides replacing the file (ADR - though there's nothing automatic about it). And very often and with lots of time and effort one can raise the quality to a certain degree but don't expect miracles - there will be side effects if pushed too far and I think that's what you have experienced with getting the files back sounding worse than before.
Feel free to ask specific questions and good luck, Karl

Cedar products are nice, no question, but to call them the only 'professional' tool for de-noising audio files is like, hmm, calling a RED One the only professional camera out there.....?

The trick is using a combination of tools. Just running tracks through a denoiser will make em sound squirrelly, even with a Cedar DNS. Unless you like that underwater sound. Otherwise a combo of broadband denoisers, selective EQ, volume automation, and the right roomtone can get things sounding closer to seamless. So if the place you're going to use doesn't have even a small console for automation... they're going to have a tough time.

I agree with Tom, I mentioned Cedar because with small intervention it gives most natural sound I heard. If you screwed in field recording than all the tools in the world can't help you.
Karl, it is the only really professional tool I have heard, and I tested quite a lot (software ones).
Of course, I am not saying that there aren't any other in the world.

Hi Stephen, I'm much too busy right now to bid on your project, but I'll throw my two cents in.
First question I was a little unsure of... Are you going to be able to deliver the OMF audio export in two weeks, OR do you expect all of the Audio Post to be completed in under two weeks?
Just a couple of tips... You mention that you are looking for a pro to work at considerably less than full rates. Have a budget number ready that you are willing to pay for these services. Don't expect noise reduction qualities of a $16K mix out on a $2K budget. When you deliver, always provide bounced down Quicktime Video files with stereo mix along with your OMF files. I wouldn't spend a lot of time mixing in FCP adjusting audio levels, as the Audio Post Pro will remix the OMF files from scratch.
Do spend the time to make sure your audio tracks for export are OMF compliant.

Good Luck with your project!

Thanks to everyone who has contributed suggestions. We have several good possibilities here and just wish we have a $1,000,000 budget to do them with!

Thanks again. To say that making this first film has been an adventure is the understatement of the year! It's almost been like going to film school!
