  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Pic of Working Fixed Lens Red Scarlet

Where is the footage that is produced by Scarlet?

All those accessories discussions and concerns here are so totally void if there is no chance to see some clip.

I don't care handles, batt packs etc. as long I do not know the pic capabilities of the
camera. Sure, there a specs.... but.. heeeello?

What do I need a discussions about accessories if the Scarlet has crap footage
(I hope it will not that way).

But please... facts and pants down. Give us footage... gdmnt.

I guess you missed this one shot with the Scarlett 2/3 x 8 Zoom.... http://red.cachefly.net/focus_8.mov

Scarlet 2/3" footage was posted months ago... more when we get a chance to breathe.

Jim

I like to imagine what the "..." in Jim's post is :) Well played sir. My fingers may have got the best of me if I were you.

What about the configuration kit?

I see in the store the viewfinder for 3200$ and I'm worried

Scarlet can be cheap but if the accessories are so expensive...

Talking about the footage... well, when I'll see a good test of the Scarlet (with a color chart and "nonsense" like that) I'll begin to consider Scarlet a camera and no only a project

Do you see Panasonic, Sony etc releasing colour chart footage?

I'm sure, sometime before launch, we will see some well shot footage from the Epic/Scarlet range, but patience is the name of the game around here!

Well, consider the fact that Scarlet is modular. It's up to us to make that work for us, not against us.

The RED BOMB EVF is, by all accounts, fantastic. It uses an actual HD display (720p) unlike most other EVFs I've seen or read about. For that caliber of display it is small, light, and contains heaters to ensure it works in cold environments. It also contains two user-asignable buttons which interface with the camera. So, basically, RED is again pretty much offering the "best you can buy for the money...and then some".

Of course, it doesn't matter if something is a great deal or a great value if it is still way out of my price range. So I can instead look at third party options that are being developed by people like RedRock and Zacuto. They aren't HD, they don't have heaters, and they won't offer the same I/O capabilities of the RED BOMB. But then again, it's...what, about 1/5 of the price?

Likewise, the touchscreen LCD displays that are made by RED are also "expensive". But they are, of course, very well built. And really, they are purpose built to work fantastically well with the camera system. Fortunately for those who are more concerned with having an LCD in the first place, rather than how well one performs, third party options are available, be it from Marshall, Panasonic, SmallHD, or some Chinese fellow on E-bay. The choice is yours.

I'll be open minded, of course, but if you think it's odd to bring up that having one ring might be drawback, I'm sorry.

I've never seen a camera of this quality w/ one ring. It is a different type of camera and there seem to be valid options for controlling more than one at the same time, but it's hard to keep on top of the ever changing Scarlet... even though I spend quite a bit of time here. So we'll see. Hopefully it all works well, it think it should, but there's really no way to know until the camera is locked down and released.

i'm not sure i'm saying its odd, i guess i was looking for someone to give me something to think about that i hadn't. i just have never shot in any way that i've used more than one manual ring on a lens. someone please enlighten me, i'm sure i have something to learn.

Dolly zoom would be about the only thing that comes to mind, personally...

and that would be better done with two hands on the lens? seems like it would make a lot more sense to control one or probably both remotely... and don't tell me you're going to try a zolly by yourself when you have to dolly, pull focus, and zoom. i mean, surely you could at least call your mum or your best mate to help you zoom it... lol

Oh, I agree. I'm just trying to come up with scenarios that involve two wheels turning at once :)

Yes, agreed, but understand newer footage might be a great relief while we wait the extra mile.

Exactly! :thumbup1:

This short "brother shoot daddy clip" is useless.
We need at least footage which has been shot in normal ambient.
....in a way this cam is supposed to be used. With acceptable background,
with people, things.

So far, I've had no chance to evaluate Scaret's pic quality.
The 1-2 footages I have seen so far (which seems to be out of spec now) is on same level as 5D. Nothing special.

In short words: I am still not convinced of Scarlet.

The one ring thing

The one ring thing

The only thing I’ve ever really done with two rings is quickly adjust zoom then switch to the focus ring to focus. This has only been because I generally have disliked rocker speed settings for the zoom. When zooming on the ring it is more responsive for quick slight adjustments (camera and lens dependent of course).

I have absolutely no doubts that some combination of adjustment dials and settings on the Scarlet will not only be sufficient, but probably preferable.

okay, i can understand what you're saying. i've done the same. but i've never had too much of a problem with the video cameras that only have a digital zoom control, and i can guarantee the scarlet will allow a lot finer control than that (and you can always set toggle switches to quickly do that on the ring anyways). i guess i'm being a little defensive, we're all emotionally attached to this thing by now... however - i really do feel confident it's going to be a real pleasure to work with it. so, i agree:

Don’t get me wrong. I’m with you 100%. I was just thinking, when have I even ever used both rings and that was all I could come up with. Like I said I think it will be highly likely that one of the configurations on Scarlet will turn out to be preferable to two (or more) rings on a lens. These guys really think their designs out and I have faith.

About the side handle: I had a chance to hold the Epic with side handle for about 30 minutes. I wanted to get a feeling for what it would be like to shoot for long periods when working on documentaries. I have small hands, but found the side handle surprisingly comfortable. The shape and texture are right on. Considering all the factors that had to be balanced, especially the need to fit a battery inside it, I think Red did an outstanding job. I did find the scroll wheel on the front top difficult to reach though. There isn't a clear path for the index finger to angle up to it. I pointed this out and was told that they were aware of this and that it was being addressed. In general, for small hands all the controls are a little bit of a stretch - they don't sit right under your fingers like a dslr - but then there's little danger of hitting anything accidentally either. There's tons of user-selectable buttons which is really nice. I can't wait to start customizing! :). The touch-screen menus are really sweet. After using them, it's hard to imagine wanting to shoot without the touch screen.

I have been really lucky to have held both the Epic and Scarlet. The Scarlet is lighter in weight than the Epic even with the fixed lens. This is due to the Scarlet body being more narrow.
Here is one of the reasons why Scarlet S35 was a better idea than Epic Light, Epic-S or whatever Epic may be.
