  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Pic of Working Fixed Lens Red Scarlet

Monitor out.

Monitor out.

The monitor appears to be attached by a cable. I've seen this with all of RED cams. So it goes from the monitor to the Red Brain I assume?

Why doesn't RED make it so you can slide or snap the monitor in to the body without having any loose cables around. I know this seems minor, but I'm just really curious. It would look so much "cleaner" and less things in the way when you are doing the run and gun...less to obstructions.

There is a shorter interconnect cable than the one shown in the video; in practice there is nothing to snag there (see attached image)

I think it is so you can mount the monitor wherever you want and not be locked into having it only in one place.

Correct. Up to 10 ft away from the Brain as a minimum, maximum range to be confirmed.

Also it allows us to offer several different types of monitoring option, such as Touchscreen LCD, EVF etc

Handle with a strap. Wide strap.

Not so thrilled about handle design (shape/depth) but willing to adapt because of everything else. Still voting for another handle design down the line, if possible.

The thing is why can't they make so you can just snap or slide it in and then have an option for a cable...now you have the best of both worlds? I'm sure they thought of this..just wondering what would prevent this from being engineered this way.

Would love to hear from RED or anyone that knows the answer to this question. Thanks.

Well, I don't work for RED, but...

Having a slide in monitor mounting plate would require additional machining of the brain. And it would require additional mounting points/brackets. And it would require very sturdy (i.e. weather and idiot-proof) non-standard connectors.

All of that means more complexity, more time, and more money.

The cable is not very large and, really could very easily be taped or otherwise secured quite close in to the camera and/or monitor, if not to the camera and/or monitor. In that configuration, it the monitor might as well be directly connected to the camera. Then, it's really only a problem if you have lots of stuff really violently hitting or scratching your camera...which would probably be knocking the monitor/evf out of alignment anyway and making the shot so shaky it's useless. In which case, I imagine the question becomes why you've thrown your camera into a pit of wolverines. It's not just going to pop off if the camera brushes up against people in a crowd or the like.

Ultimately, I think being able to monitor from anywhere is a way bigger benefit than having to deal with one cable which comes in a variety of lengths to fit different setups.

Yup. For sure. And also choice of monitoring options as noted above.:thumbup1:

RED's design lets the user choose, who wouldn't want that?

I'm currently at Red Studios helping with the Santa Fe 3d Workshop with Geoff Boyle. Just as I am sitting there...in comes Jarred with a WORKING Red Scarlet 8X fixed camera! Naturally I was dying to hold the camera. As Jarred passed it to me, he told me I was the first public person to hold a working Red Scarlet. Let me tell you folks, it is real and is working.

(snip)

That's the sweetest little cam to watch when one is working nightshift...

That guy in the background seems a bit anxious, though... -:)

OMG GOD MY EYES. I cant see... is this true? I want one asap... hey JIM you got my address right ....

I'm all for the side handle, and have little need for the I/O module except for one thing:

Any chance you can add a single 4-pin aux. power/camera start/stop lemo port to the side handle?

Right now everything is so compact with the side SSD, the side handle, and the small audio inputs on the front. It's a dream.

I only see one thing missing that I'd really like, an aux. power port w/start/stop (like the back of the Red One) - run your microforce or ??? w/out needing any additional modules.

I know the brain is stuffed, no room - but any chance you could fit it on the side handle?

If you add it to the side handle...I won't ask for another thing:devil:

ok so we have some footage of the camera, now how about some footage FROM it!!!

landed a job today, where do I send my $$$?

One ring for focus, iris and zoom? Does anyone else see that as a drawback?

I agree that the side handle is incredibly important.. I never take it off. But its obviously way too expensive to give it away for free. Maybe we will re-arange that Stage 2 package to accommodate and drop something else.

I love that idea and I hope you guys explore it. It looks so right with it on there.

That Scarlet he's holding has probably existed in that exact assembled form for at least 2 months now. I'd be willing to bet.

The timing of this flurry of Scarlet news, so close to AF100 and F3 release dates, can't possibly be a coincidence. My wild guess is that the Scarlet hype machine will shift a gear over the next few weeks and you'll see more and more of these types of posts,.. and yes the fanboys will finally get their footage they've been begging for. It'll look good too. Real good.

The efforts to stave F3 and AF100 defectors will not be subtle. Which is good for all of us because we all want to see this thing out in the wild.

If RED says they are progressing on their own time schedule, regardless of what Sony, Panasonic and Canon are doing, well then I guess we'll just have to believe them. Or not.

The first looks at the Scarlet proto (or whatever it is) are pretty exciting. I would have been more excited by a pallet of components ready to assemble. A picture of 5,000 Scarlet bodies on shelves floor to ceiling, and a fully staffed assembly line ready to assemble them.

One ring for focus, iris and zoom? Does anyone else see that as a drawback?

No... You can assign the ring to any of those three funtions. Assign those functions to other dials, switches, etc.. on the camera. You can toggle between the functions.. Assign that toggle to any button, etc..

So you can have focus on the lens gear/ring while you control iris from the dial on the handle and zoom on a rocker switch. Need to switch to zoom on the lens ring and use AF mode? Toggle your settings from another button.

Or at least that's how I understand it all... :)

You have to hold the camera from the Side Grip to appreciate it Hrvoje, it's very comfortable.
