Hello all,
I’m new in this business and want to make a professional looking movie (script is done). The problem is that there is not much money to buy or rent a camera. Due to many years of digital photography my dream to make motion pictures grew every day. My problem is: I don’t know were to begin with the work on a movie because not knowing any person in this business. I know it will be a hard way to go but I really want to do it! I have no references to show at camera rental shops and no experience how to get a cam for a low budget film. I’m well informed about technical facts but to complete my work, I need a practical experience, too.
If you can help me on my way of creating my own movie, please write a posting about everything that comes to your mind when you read these lines!

Go on the Canon DSLRs or Panasonic GH1. Or wait for Scarlet.

Film school?... ;-)

Read these books: the Five C's of Cinematography, Set Lighting Technicians Handbook, Reflections (21 Cinematographers at work), and finally, the American Cinematographers Manual. Or, fly me to Germany and I'll shoot it for you :).

My friend, the cinematography is just a small part of this business. Your tips are a valuable hint in that department, though.

Kai, I'd take advantage of the Philip's offer anyway ;-)

I hear you brother, I think your best bet is to fish around for a producer. If you can find someone who thinks your script is worth shooting you're on your way to step one.
The guy doesn't even have to be a well known pro it could just be an eager wants to be a producer type who knows some people.

Second thing you want to do is start looking around your area for people who finance low budget films, there is bound to be at least a few that might even give you enough for some equipment rental I think the EX1 is a good bet but camera choice will be up to your budget in the end though.

You also want to check around with the local drama schools etc. nothing will sell your low budget short film like great acting and if you take your time casting thats exactly what you'll get.
And be honest with yourself, think "Would I go to the movies to see this?" when you are truly at that point I think you're ready to shoot, or if you've finished the film by then it's ready for film festivals.

Hi Kai, there have been some good suggestions. While you are following those through, I suggest you find a good script editor to go through your script and assist you to get it in the best possible shape you can get it, before you start filming.
Good luck. Regards, Joe

Hello all,

If you have the script all you need to do is find a cinematographer
to go out and start shooting some test scenes to get you going.
If you like how those turn out..then go find a producer and
enough money to get feature going.

I want to be be the cinematographer! I don't know where to find a producer for this movie. Which kind of people are producers?
