I haven't shot a single frame yet*, but have already bumped into some small glitches. I wonder if this reflects a typical experience...?

a) REDMOTE wireless connection feels pretty unreliable. It dropped connection when I was standing less 3 feet from the camera, and refused to reconnect. I was scrolling through available color temperatures using REDMOTE's scroll wheel at the time. Rebooting Epic allowed the camera and remote to reconnect. Only a few moments later I was 6 feet away and connection dropped again. This time switching REDMOTE off and on again allowed a reconnect.

b) Severe banding on the 7" RED PRO LCD.

c) Slightly glitchy menus. The tiny red bar underlining a parameter gets stuck sometimes but pressing remote's MENU key once or twice has so far "unstuck" it. Commands are doubled every once in a while and other tiny things, but nothing really major, it has to be said.

d) Switching LCD view between 1:1 and normal view can result in the image being split in half (approx. 70/30 split) and the right side of the image being placed on the left side of the image. This happens way too often. The issue disappeared once by switching between 1:1 and normal view, but usually the only fix is to reboot Epic.

Granted, the above are nothing much compared to the feeling of handling the EPIC. It's quite simply porn for tech heads. The boot-up time is phenomenal and just browsing through the menus gives one the impression of massive image processing power waiting beneath the surface, waiting to be unleashed.

*: I haven't got any SSDs yet. First my bank took 4 days to transfer the funds to RED US, then they took a couple of days to ship the goods and then, as a Coup de Grâce, Easter barged in and halted everything. It'll be 5-6 days before the SSDs arrive and I don't know if I can make it... :)

The trick I found for the 1:1 glitch is to do it slowly.
You mean... wait for a while before switching between the modes again?

You might add your voice to this thread on on-going REDmote issues.

Petri, what about if we test at some point the Redmote connection with my camera and vice versa using my Redmote and your camera? I'm surprised you have these problems as haven't experienced the same myself.

a) Open a support ticket with Red - although Redmote wifi range seems to be quite limited at the moment, yours seems unusually poor.

b) This is the current state of the 7" Red LCD Pro - hoping for a firmware upgrade fix on this.

Sounds good to me!

Just used Epic with REDMOTE for half an hour straight, going through the menus, mapping functions to REDMOTE slots etc. while sitting on a sofa approx. 5 feet away from the camera. REDMOTE connection did not drop out once.

What changed?

What changed?
Two things: location and REDMOTE's relative position to Epic. The location change was only 10 feet within the same room, however. Earlier I used the remote while standing up next to the camera, on the SSD side, with the remote approx. 10 inches above the camera (which was on a tripod). That's when I experienced a few disconnects. After moving the camera so I could sit on a sofa while looking at the LCD, the remote was again on the SSD side of the camera, but approx. 20 inches below the camera, 4 feet away. That got me 30 minutes of constant use without disconnects.

After my half an hour of going through the menus with REDMOTE, I shut both the remote and the camera down in the usual way. Perhaps an hour later I decided to go through the menus a bit more, powered the Epic up... and got the living poop scared out of me.

Epic would not boot up. The led above the power button went out and I could hear the fan start up -- but there was something markedly different about the fan sound. It went "whoomp, whoomp, whoomp", i.e. it picked up rpms for half a second, then dropped down to its starting rpms, picked up rpms, dropped down etc. ad infinitum. No image appeared on the LCD.

I recycled the power a few times by keeping the power button pressed down a few seconds until the camera shut down, then pressing the power button again. No change, just the fan going through a cycle. I then removed battery cable, waited for 15 seconds, re-connected power cable and pressed the power button. No change.

I don't mind saying that at this point I had a lump in my throat. As a last resort, I tried one more thing: I shut the camera down by keeping the power button pressed, and once the fan died, I immediately pressed the power button again. Earlier I had always waited for a few seconds before pressing the button again.

It worked: Epic booted up normally.

But... am I right to be worried about this?
