  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First HDRx Shot

Well like I said earlier, you really need to see these properly blended by doing a luma key, not just by superimposing one image over the other, which, I am beginning to think, is all that Red Cine-X does essentially. If handled properly, you would maintain the shadow detail while brining back the cloud detail by doing a luma key up there. Mixing the two images together doesn't really get you there, if I am correct in my observations.

Hello.

Luma key is not the way to go. Because of shutterspeed and different time span. Magic motion has a time algorithm that blends both tracks the best keeping the good highlights and shadows.

Resolve and other Color correcting tool will implement them soon I hope.

Luma key is EXACTLY the best way to do this correctly:

"Using a normal luma key, and refining the edge". These guys know what they're talking about. Temporal issues with HDRx present issues that may limit its best use. But the above example shows the best HDRx is capable of, and it absolutely involves luma key. Great demo. Watch it.

That's the best example of HDRx I've seen, nicely explained too, thanks for the link.

Yeah that's the key. The images have to blend the "best" of both the darks and highlights to make a beautiful high contrast image. Are there any tutorials out on this yet?

saw those links. The HDR in photos definitely is the mark to shoot for. Hopefully one day we'll have that on our Epics in motion but I'm not that impressed for HDR online examples at current.

Highlights are still blown out on the HDRx shot. Needs a higher "stop" protection setting.

If you go very high you'll get motion artifacts even with Magic Motion (desaturated highlights). You need to use an exposure meter, find out how much range you really need and expose the base channel for the low-light areas, then expand with HDRx for the highlights. I found that I rarely needed more than 2 stops, maybe 3. Use the least amount possible.

On easter we'll be shooting very demanding situations, the famous "Feuerräder" (fire wheels) of Northern Germany, probably one of the most demanding subjects for HDRx. I'll report later…
