  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Firmware upgrades are awesome, but is there a way of saving soft and shortcut keys?

That'd be rad, Trent! Like a "save state" of all of the settings in the camera with one "save to ssd/export" button and one "load from ssd/import" button.

I literally had to "all arrow" each of the "sub-sets" to create a preset with every setting in it. I'm starting to understand what you guys were trying to do (allow the user to select *just* the "keys sub-set" or *just* the "looks sub-set"), but even tthose things are in tertiary tab. It's a little convoluted... It's like there's a redundant menu for selecting/saving presets, when you really don't have a choice as to which can *save* your custom settings...

...I feel like I'm not articulating this properly.

I think I understand what you are saying. And if you are confused others will be to. Your feedback is useful and we'll try to use it to improve the camera.

One issue I have been having with some presets after saving and reloading or moving between them is that the framerate is not being loaded with the preset.

example.

I load a preset I call baseline with basic defaults like ISO, 24 FPS, ect.
then I swith to 1 FPS framerate preset or a frame summing preset.
When I switch back to baseline the framerate might be 82 FPS or something off and I have to reload it a couple of times.

I feel like someone should write a whole book, or at least a white paper, on using this function. The more I read about it the more intrigued I am but haven't dug into it yet. And, to be honest, the Ops Guide is often rather brief and lacking in detail about a lot of subjects.

I tripped up on this one as well. As much as I love the functionality of Red, the UI is really pretty poor, and this is a case where it is totally non-intuitive how to make it work. A similar one is the blackshading menu. The whole "save to user", "save to media" and the title of the current BS data is about as clear as mud. I love the immediate reaction to feedback though -- definitely a strongpoint of Red.

It's not exactly what you are looking for, but this post might be a good start.

I think it's a little harsh to call the UI "pretty poor" - although I might just be taking it personally. Certain features like custom presets are very difficult to make both powerful and intuitive. I agree that the documentation could be beefed up a bit, but most who complain obviously haven't even read the documentation we do provide. There is even in-camera documentation that can be accessed directly for any dialog you have open.

As you said, we do take feedback seriously and try to fix pain points as they are identified. One take away from this thread for me is that we really need to add a one stop "save the complete configuration of this camera to a preset and export it to the media" feature for those who want to simply back everything up and restore it after an upgrade.

OK, you're right -- I was too harsh. For a product that is so low-volume as Red the UI is pretty good. I would not expect Red to have a team dedicated to just to MMI and there are plenty of CE products with much higher volumes that are as bad or worse. And I agree that it is powerful so maybe that is why it lacks in the intuition department.

Trent UI is awesome thank you.Comparing with other cameras (Alexa,F65 and BMC) and i find Red UI unrivaled.
One more question is there any way to add Quadrant type of custom lines on frameguide?

That would be awesome!

I myself have many firmwares ago tried to save my presets. didn't work out and I gave up. And I like to think that I'm pretty good with technology. One button to rule them all would be awesome...
