  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Firmware Speculation...

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Power Management is the reason it has taken this long(er?) to release the new firmware update.

Top two on my wish list are phantom power and power management. After shooting for only my second time with my Epic over the weekend and reading the thread on fan noise ruining an interview, I definitely would like to see some attention put on improving fan noise performance while in normal recording modes. I will eventually be doing long interview takes with this camera in quiet rooms, and I would hate to think that to get the fan noise level low enough to not be either a live distraction or captured on the audio track that I will be limited to takes of just a few minutes. So I hope the good folks at RED devote some energy to refining that aspect of Epic.

Elizabeth, are you planning on doing interviews in 5k?... or 4, 3, 2? I plan on doing some BTS interviews and I think the camera will not overheat in any way by setting it to turn off while recording. I think the thread you are referring to may be from pilot error, but I could be wrong since I haven't followed the thread. In my case, since the interviews will be for BTS, i.e., DVD/Blu-Ray inclusion, I will likely shoot the interviews @ 2k, maybe 4k for some of the generic behind-the-scenes shots so I can pan and scan.

I'm pretty sure Phantom power has been promised, but I'm not sure if Power Management will make the cut.

Hi Elsie. The interviews for this project will be 5K to match most of the rest of the project, which will also be 5K. This is the thread I'm referring to. I would only characterize it as "pilot error" in the sense that the operator had no experience with the fact that if you set the fan manually low enough to really be unobtrusive in a quiet room, the camera will override the manual setting when core/sensor temps get high enough and blast on. I'm certain the poster would have preferred a higher initial setting (or auto) if that would have resulted in not having the fan blast on during a key moment in the take, but I can't blame the poster for wanting to get fan noise down to begin with. I was shooting in the spiral staircase of a lighthouse tower on Saturday in Florida. Audio was not crucial, just wanted the footsteps captured. Fan was set to auto. I have not yet listened to what was recorded on separate system audio, but the live impression was that the camera was too loud during recording with fans set to auto. I'm not going to make a big thing out of it until I've had more personal experience, but the posts in that thread give anyone real pause about how friendly Epic will currently be for long takes in quiet circumstances.

A clean feed from SDI would be awesome. I believe it was promised for the next major build.
