  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone else noticed when going from firmware 3.0.0 to 3.0.6 the noise levels have improved. I was viewing the RAW noise meters and RGB histograms on 3.0.0 just before upgrading to 3.0.6 and pointed the camera at the same exact shot, with same lighting. I had about 15% noise in the RAW meters and no highlight clipping. After the firmware upgrade, it was 0% noise and red channel stop light goes on, and RGB histogram shifts slightly over to the right. All camera settings remained unchanged. It's as if the sensor suddenly became more sensitive.

Has anyone else noticed this? I suspect that whatever happened on version 3.0.0, that my camera had always been more noisy than my friends, and something in 3.0.6 corrected that to "more normal" noise and sensitivity levels. Now the noise floor feels much improved and I can see a lot more into the shadows.

Anyone else experiencing something similar?

was the shot indoors in a controlled lighting environment? If not, then the light very well changed during your upgrade.

haven't updated yet... will specifically test for this and report back when i do

Im real curious if this is true. Will test later

Interesting. I haven't upgraded yet. Probably will today.

in 3.0.6 we've optimized the histogram and raw clip meters to more closely reflect the raw exposure viewing tools

in the release notes: Fixed raw exposure meters to match raw exposure view

All of the tools should now give you a more consistent representation of what is going on in the camera.

Does this firmware release fix the scaling issue when shooting with hd sdi? We are shooting directly into avid using a BMD multibridge pro to convert the true P signal to PsF and we would love a fix for this if its out yet. I was going to download the firmware and test it myself but if someone can chime in and let me know ahead of time I would be grateful. Thanks!

Assuming you are talking about the 4K HD scaling. No, it's not updated in 3.0.6... but that fix is just around the corner.

We get black borders no matter what resolution we shoot, on the top and bottom of the frame. So the post guys crop it 6 percent and then we lose the lines, but the DP wanted me to check to see if this firmware release fixed that or not. Thanks for the help! Anxiously awaiting to brighten up his day when this issue is solved, until then 6 percent crops are our work around

The black borders in modes other than 4K HD are due to the camera maintaining the current recording formats aspect ratio within the monitor resolution. So unless the camera were to crop to the monitor resolution, you'll always see black borders in non 16:9 formats.

Matthew, thanks for the input. I noticed that in the release notes, but wasn't quite sure if my issue was related to the fix.

Is there any plans to make a 2k and 3k 16/9 aspect ratio? Looking forward to the 4khd scaling issue being resolved. Thanks for the help!!! Much appreciated and I love the quick response time! You guys rock

this will be my first time updating the firmware how is it done can one of you explain this please.

Thanks,

its all there in the manual as well as with each upgrade there is instruction :)

Download the latest beta firmware from red.com/support Click on downloads, then "beta."

Throw the update file onto the root of a reformatted SSD. Stick the SSD in your cam, and you will be prompted to update the firmware. Easy pie.

You will also have to update your redmote.
