  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Finally understood redcode bitrates, and my fears are completely gone, on wikipedia it says:

"An 8 GB card can hold around 8 minutes of 4K footage and 34 minutes of 2K footage."

Using the iphone app calculator for 2k and redcode28 it comes up with 26,37 GB for 60 minutes of footage 16/9 25 frames.

If this data it's right, we are dealing with the best codec of all times, I always had the fear of huge files and being unable to store them quickly without buying a hard drive a day.

It's lighter then HVX200 files!

Hope I'm right!

Night!

An 8GB card will hold 4-5 minutes of 4K at 24fps footage... 2K is 4times less resolution, so about 20 minutes.

And yes it is the best codec in the world.

Makes me wonder if you guys have been contacted by any big players to make REDcode a standardized codec...

No disrespect, but I think best codec should be thrown around loosely. I view codecs kind of like lenses. There are many great lenses, but the best ones really depends on what you plan on using with it.

For example, for recording videos and editing videos, REDcode is best because of the freedom it can offer. On the other hand, as a codec videos to be displayed on the web, not so sure if it can be given the "best codec" award. lol

Anyways, I didn't mean to be a smart ass, but just wanted to share that aspect of my view point :).

I'm going to assume the codec is tied to the sensor, and not necessarily compatible as a read/write codec from other sources. At least I don't believe there are any post-applications which can write to the format currently.

Any future plans to make this available as a pipeline codec?

Think Jim was talking about acquisition format. And then there is deliverable codecs and we all know where they are going with that one. If you haven't seen Red Ray projected on a large screen yet, you really need to. It doesn't seem possible for a codec to look that good at such a small data rate. I wouldn't be surprised to see a web codec come out of all this too. And then, maybe Red really will have a claim on the best codec for that purpose too.
