  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Finally FCP X support for RED

Don't want to get ahead of myself but...

RED and Apple working together on Final Cut Pro X! Feels like old times.
Hope it gives us just that much of a better world.

Great news from Red. So we just now need to Apple to fix FCP ? We are still using FCP7 and migrating to Premier.

Kyle: it's an option. ProRes is less resource intensive than REDCODE, so some people may want to use that option. All about options.

So true. There's more to life than a 15 sec shot ;)

... and you can generate proxies on the fly in the background too, which is great for editing on a laptop and only copying across small ProRes Proxies.

Hooray for this. And Apple have implemented some other good stuff- especially paste selected attributes and sticky clip in and out points. They've got a browser window for the diehard two editing window types too, and best of all exporting ("Share") is a background task now, so you can carry on working while things are exporting.

And it all seems to be acceptably fast on my MacPro 12-core, even without a Rocket, which is nice.

Looks like a solid and well-considered job from Apple and RED. Thanks, guys. It will be nice not to HAVE to round-trip to Resolve to finish even simple stuff!

Cheers, Hywel.

Awesome update! Now FCP-X is the best editing platform out there, hands down! Great to see Apple and Red working together i.e. Apple promoting the Red Rocket on Apple's website. Good times!

Does FCPX read rmd files associated with clips? What look parameters does it recognize? If I grade a clip in RCX and then bring into FCPX will it represent my look? Don't have FCPX right now with me but very curious from a color management standpoint.

Please!!

if you will be trying fcpX for first time.... Get the ripple training videos , $39.99 (or free from web). Worth every penny. FcpX is an entirely new beast and the ond way we used to edit on fc7 , pp are long gone. Get ready to re-learn your approach to editing ! It's well worth it though. No regrets!

I can't argue with the strides Adobe made in Premiere the lasts few years. I'm not the biggest fan of the interface or feel but Adobe has gone out of their way to accomodate Redusers and nothing that Apple releases changes that.

While Apple still has some work to do it must be said they made very impressive progress on FCP X. I really do believe Apple's approach will gradually redefine editing software for next several years. A big statement but my belief.

I'm just happy to see that RED and Apple seem to be cooperating a bit better. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes but from the user point of view things were looking kind of shakey for a minute.

In all I hope all the big NLE's (Avid, FCP X, Premiere, Vegas, Eidus, Lightworks, etc) continue this level of support for RED. It only helps.

Its all about choices and we need that.
I am hoping this will get Avid to open to the ROCKET card.

I also hope Avid gets things together. FCP X is my personal/business platform of choice
but I work many post freelance gigs where it is still heavily dominated by Avid.

I hope Avid pulls out of the rut Jake Blackstone and others mentioned on this thread.
A large void would be left in the industry if they for some reason disappeared. Too many jobs
and facilities are dependent on them.

I've done work on many file based shows cut on Avid and it's always an adventure getting the media
to relink with AMA.

I honestly never used the Rocket through the Avid. I can say that Avid could seriously revamp the AMA workflow
and perhaps leverage GPU acceleration to help out.

It appears to. My one-lights are intact.

edit:

From the Plugin Manual:
RMD Workflow
• FCP X supports working with RED RMD sidecar files in several ways
• When editing a clip’s RED raw settings in FCP X, the clip’s RMD file will be updated concurrently• The location of the RMD file depends on how media was imported into FCP X
Via Copy
• If importing a clip via copy to the Final Cut events folder, any pre-existing RMD file will also be copied• If no pre-existing RMD file is present. FCP X will will create one in the Original Media folder
Via referenCe
• If importing a clip via reference, the clip and any pre-existing RMD are symlinked into he originalmedia folder
• If no pre-existing RMD file is present. FCP X will will create one in the Original Media folder

Well for starters Avid would have to allow 2K and up editing.
The ROCKET in our Avid/Resolve system doesnt show up on Avid thats for sure.

If you do color correction inside FCP X on R3D footage (with the color board and the secondaries and masks), are you effectively working on the RAW?
Like you would in Resolve? (with the only difference being that Resolve of course has much better CC tools)?
If so, for a lot of smaller assignments, you could use FCP X and color correct on the full RAW without a round trip to Resolve and without a full Resolve license being able to render out full 4K or 5K... It's a pretty big deal.
Together with having automated Proxies made (if you want), this puts FCP X right between the big NLE's again as a serious option.

You would be working from a representation of RAW, i.e. when FCPX renders out your changes it will transcode (mostly in the background) to ProRes, based upon the .r3d source... if I'm not mistaken.

What is Resolve's interim codec? It is DPX on PC's, no? Is that dependent upon your system's existing codecs or does Resolve install it's own codec for these things?

As you say, being able to output 4k from FCPX is a big deal. 4k output, direct referencing of r3d for operations, and background transcoding are the big three advantages to the new flow I think. :-)

That's a big question better answered by one more qualified than me, and I have yet to run a test through to output but it does appear the answer may be yes. It looks like we have a solid implementation here that is taking advantage of the RAW goodness. Time will tell. Let us know how it works out for you.

Hi Scott,

so if I'm reading your reply correctly, you can achieve more or less the same quality in FCP X as in Resolve? As they both access RAW for color correction and both have a render codec that's very good (Prores 4444 vs DPX)? (I'm not talking about the tools in themselves here)

Resolve doesn't use interim codec per se. At least not by caching files for grading explicitly, like some other systems. Nevertheless, because you can't grade or edit bayered image, interim codec must be used, even if it's only stored in RAM in real time. I bet, that in case of Resolve it's DPX, because that what's used by Resolve for caching.

Thanks Jake, I'm sure you have posted that on more than one occasion.

So what would the workflow be like if you want to use Davinci Resolve to do color correction? Just edit your project (in 4k) in FCP, export (4K) file and import in Resolve and export the color corrected (4k) project for delivery? That's it? And by the way, what file format would you export from FCP for Resolve?
