  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Rumor......2013 :(

Ok, seriously. Someone needs to buy Final Cut Studio from Apple and develop it properly.

Adobe? Grass Valley? Autodesk? Anyone!?

Slightly misleading. The rumour suggests that it will be pushed back to 2011... you know a whole 4 months from now... and that the enhanced single UI is what was pushed back to 2013. I don't care about a new interface. I care about 64bit support.

This rumor makes no sense. The major Final Cut rewrite everyone has been expecting requires a major QuickTime update, which was never likely to come before the release of 10.7. As such, it was never likely to happen this year. The earliest 10.7 is likely to be released is Q3 2011, and Q4 is more likely.

Now, maybe Apple was planning to push out a massive QT rewrite with Final Cut instead of with an OS release, but that's sufficiently implausible that it's far more likely that this rumor is just wrong or misleading.

It's possible Apple is planning another interim release of Final Cut leading up to the major rewrite; that could come sooner. But at this point, I think another interim release would be a waste of resources. You're just not going see the kind of big improvements people want on top of the current codebase; Apple should just go for broke with the rewrite.

64 bit, more integration in current workflows, IE. NATIVE R3D editing, with full raw controls, and anything else you can throw at it (maybe even revamp log and transfer and map it out to what Avid AMA is like) , revamp compressor for 64 bit, and have it run more seamless like media encoder, more options in color, and prep for a streamlined Da Vinci workflow, get rid of motion, and figure out a way to dynamic link with AE/Photoshop.

and for gods sake, a real media management system, and some kind of GPU acceleration on effects. CUDA for example, why they keep falling back on ATI as their default flagship video card with their mac pro's is beyond my understanding.

I seriously don't want to leave FCP, but workflow changes by the hour, if they don't have something along these lines by next summer, a lot of people including myself are gonna have to jump ship. A lot of people already have. The frustration is just piling up!

Could be taken...

Could be taken...

many ways.

Interesting to see the shake team has so much to offer still.

They are projecting overhauls till 2013 (shows a road-map).

Vigorous discussion and fighting over interface with multiple teams. Don't know
if this will be good or bad... but to me it shows people are still fiercely dedicated.

If the NAB launch (that is what I assuming this is hinting) gets us to full 64bit, new quicktime full integration, and some sort of decent open cl, CUDA, and decent multiproccesor support, better stability, than I can overlook a unified user interface.

But if Apple doesn't drop some hints between now and then, I think Adobe's recent moves will really relegate Final Cut to...

MEDIA 100 status!

You can't even begin to imagine what features will be in Foundry's STORM before 2013.

Mark, do you know (or can you say) if STORM will have Avid integration at some point? I mean similar to the XML workflow they've shown with FCP.

In all honesty are we really surprised? The Pro-Video apps have been effectively ignored by Apple for a few years now. The telling point is in the article: "Apple has reassigned engineers to work on projects for the company's iOS devices."

And despite Steve Jobs's claims that it will be "Awesome", I'm not holding my breath. Given what's been coming out recently (iTunes 10 comes to mind), "Awesome" probably means "Oh look, the interface is so SHINY".

I totally agree with Chris in regards to the Quicktime rebuild and such. Apple burned a LOT of bridges with their half-ass FCS3 (Yes, I know it's not technically 3, but we've got to call it something) update. If their next FCS update requires the new Quicktime, they're better off waiting for 10.7. That said, if they *DO* wait until 10.7, aka Late 2011, they're going to lose a LOT of customers. Avid and Adobe are now miles ahead of FCP, and who know where they'll be in another year?

I'd love to see them eat Apple's lunch with a fully integrated product suite which includes an NLE that we all can love. I really prefer to give my dollars to true innovators, and those days seem pretty far in the past for FCP. And this seems to be early innings for The Foundry. Nice.

Hogwash Rumor.

many smart comments here. Mainly, until Quicktime is a pro app again, FCP will suffer and while i DO believe they will have an all new release, it wont be before 50% of the user base has already switched to another NLE.

Out of interest, if Apple turned round and said we'll update FCP on a much more regular basis BUT you'll need to pay for these updates, how many would be happy to pay up?

In my opinion pro users would be more than happy to pay an annual fee for FCP if it meant that the software was constantly being updated. We all know technology moves quickly and the idea of our main bread and butter software only getting updated every two years or so is scary!!!

Apple must be able to make serious money out of FCP. It is the world's most popular editing software so what are they thinking? Apple both amaze and frustrate me in equal measure.

SURELY updates mean money...if I was running this business I'd be motivated to update the software on a regular basis to keep generating revenue. I just don't get it?

Best thing now really would be for them to sell their Pro Apps Division or alternatively set them up as a separate business unit able to make quick decisions....Come on Steve, seriously if you don't pull your finger out, we're switching to AVID & Adobe and we'll also be switching back to PC's and hey, it's your loss.

Oh and while I'm on an Apple rant, your iPhone 4's reception is rubbish. It's great at everything else but I've never had so many dropped calls.:incazzato:

Man it felt good to get that out of my system.

You would think that with so many resources (cash, staff, etc) that Apple could manage to keep up with ProApps dev even while their gadget business is driving the big revenue. Apparently not. Presumably the legacy horror show that is QuickTime is a stumbling block, but I would think that a complete rewrite with some sort of "classic emulator" is critical to the kind of interactive media experience they are selling across the board.

As others have mentioned I also believe it is in the best long term interest of Apple to keep content creators (and versioners) on the platform. IF Apple is determined to have a QuickTime vs Flash standoff, they really need a QT rewrite or they are leaving their flank wide open. Just sayin'

Cheers - #19

This is nothing more than an unsubstantiated rumor....

That said, are people really waiting around for Final Cut Studio? Really? Heh, whatever.
