  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Real Time Playback of Proxies

Good point Gunleik, mine were regenerated in RCX as well. Haven't tried with proxies straight from the camera.

Clipfinder is still a total neccissity in any RED workflow with FCP, btw...

I completely agree that Clipfinder is the very best workflow.

What worries me is that Hans will get swallowed up by foundry Storm. There has not been an update from Hans since REDLINE was changed in the new SDK.

An when jim specifically posts about foundry STORM they it Sends a very STRONG message of support and a message to all RED users. I wish I'd here more public support from RED for Clipfinder which is highly functional companion program that has been a MASSIVE workflow assistant.

But Hans is just one guy trying to do it all and I know it can be hard to keep up with RED and the changes that come down. I hope for all of our sakes that Clipfinder continues to be supported.

David

Best thing would be not Hans, but Clipfinder swallowed by Storm and integrated – for a reasonable fee to Hans. What a workflow solution that could be!

Logging and transfer of information about your clips in CF for example is far more flexible than the single comment field passed to FCP by Storm now.

I'd pay extra for that.

Yes. I am a massive fan of Hans and I agree that might be a good solution. Maybe RED could even facilitate this as a strategic alliance for the vehicle of all their users.

STORM is nice, but to me Clipfinder is more of a hotrod. No fancy paint job but slot going on under the hood.

Less bling, more horsepower.

David.

Okay. . . what is the story with the inability to play MX footage proxies in FCP straight from the camera? Are you telling me that we have to regenerate all of the proxies from our thousands of shots in order to use FCP for the editing of our new film?

This is starting to sound like a real nightmare!

Stephen

Proxies work as they always have in terms of ability to playback and conform through color - it's just the performance has seemed to have degraded - at least with my system. I used to have realtime playback and ability to edit off of the _m proxies. Now I cannot seem to get even realtime with the _p (1/8 debayer). My system hasn't changed - Redcode has.

I still use the proxies to online a color project from offline prores files I generate via RRcard by using clipfinder.

If you do have to regenerate the proxies, don't worry, it happens very quickly.
You know how when you stop recording, the camera says "POST"? What it's doing there is generating the proxies. Regenerating them on your computer happens even faster.
I've regenerated proxies for several hundred shots in a matter of seconds, so thousands of shots should only take a few minutes.

Regenerting the proxies batch is quite rudimentary now. It was kind of a nightmare two months back, but now it works as prescribed.

Was quicker before, though.

Anyhow, as stated, I did work on H proxies - no problem.

M proxies - even less.

M and MX footy...

And I just finnished 10 minutes of grading realtime in color with the Rocket.

FCP does amaze me a bit when I cool down and compare features to price...

Clipfinder is still the king of RED apps, though, and I have often thought (and even suggested to Foundry once or twice) that they shoud try to collobrate with hans instead of running him down. He does excellent work where Storm is basically not working...

Anyhow.

back to the proxies: they work.

Nailed it precisely.
Also, as things keep changing and large numbers of relatively inexperienced users wrestle with RED workflow there is a tremendous support load.
And I still get, and reply to, support requests for the free version.

Point is, though (as I've stated in the "el cheapo" thread), that Clipfinder is what actually gets the Job Done on a wide scale, either all by itself or in combination with RCX and possibly Color (or whatever grader you prefer)

While I have finnished more than 7 hours of online with Clipfinder in the last two months, I haven't been able to use Storm to anything usefull yet.

I am not intending to bash The Foundry. I think Storm looks like a great idea and full effort from many people, but I feel it's a bit srtrange to not point at what actually works very well. Now.

Clipfinder + is that solution.

I just hope people will continue to buy and support Clipfinder, as it is the cornersone on all online work I am doing, and I'd feel really lost without it.

For my line of work, Storm has had very little to offer yet.
Totally aware that it is a beta and I am curiously following it.

Just want to chime in and underscore what actually does work...
