  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Pro X Released

Only to see if it would stick. It wasn't that serious a review, I touched on X and went on about my love of peanut butter sandwiches.

Must. Delete. Review

Haha. Now that makes perfect sense. :)

I think it will be way more than a few months to get this train back on the right track.

I tried to read the reviews and they were there, then gone when I went to page 2, missing when I went back to page 1, there again when I sorted by most useful, then gone again, rinse/repeat.

I suspect a glitch in the cloud. Or maybe a disturbance in the force.
You may be right, which is why I have had to implement the backup plan today. Although FCP 7 has served me fine, there have been a few things that have been a bit limiting for me. I was hoping FCPx would address some of this, and it might at some point, but for now it seems like a good time to take a break from FCP. Not totally saying good riddance, just saying I need a break until things get worked out. FCP 7 will remain on my machine and will be used when necessary. It will also be important for any ProRes files I need to work with. It's not like I would have been using FCPx on client projects right away anyhow, but as you mentioned this may take longer to sort out than I thought.

I've been holding off for FCPx and having a few others on our team do the same thing. Can't wait for 'em any longer (who knows when it will be?). We're pushing over to Adobe and Resolve (and possibly Scratch Lab). Adobe and Resolve are responding quickly to our needs, are present here on the forum, will probably figure out ways to bring into their systems anything that's truly worth having, etc. Apple? Who knows? The communication (lack thereof) is extremely difficult to deal with. There super hot new program is currently unusable without any communication on when it will (will it? with what? with whom?) be usable.

Its a great time to learn a new thing. We were looking forward to learning the Mac Pro App....

So this will be 3 (at least) Pro users in our group leaving the fold and settling elsewhere.

Apple - if you read this: Am posting this here just in case because I can't leave you a review on your own site - funny about that.

You had better tell those wimps in PR to get off their arses and address FCP users concerns. You are facing mass exodus. You have only half baked this cake before serving it to your guests and they aren't happy since you made them pay for it and had promised them how 'awesome' it was going to be.

I get that you will most likely release updates and extras (for extra money) at a later date. In fact it makes perfect sense that you sell a 'lite' version of the program and charge for the extras to make it in to a pro app for the pro users. Why would a user posting on youtube the cute thing their cat did last night need xml? Or multicam? They don't - I know that. And so why make them pay for it? You don't - I get that too. But at least give your pro users the respect they deserve and announce what is on the horizon because they are right NOW looking at the other options. And the other options work and more importantly work with established workflows. Adobe, Avid, and even Media 100 are going to do very well out of this if you don't SORT THIS OUT. Deleting user reviews on the app store is not winning you any new fans either.

Back to my cake metaphor (because I like it) - you have served up a big steaming pile of turd while trying to tell us it is the best chocolate cake ever. But one bite from people who know a good chocolate cake when they eat one, has them spitting out this brown gooey (or should that be GUI - bahahahahaha, gosh I'm witty) mess in disgust with the realisation of what's actually been served. And ask yourselves this Apple - do you think they are going to be willing to take a second bite further down the track? After they have successfully gotten rid of the bad taste in their mouths, they will find a different vendor offering delicious chocolate cake, it might be more expensive but hey, I'd pay extra not to have to munch on shit and no doubt others will feel the same.

I have used FCP since the 1999 beta release and have watched it mature over the years. It grew to be a kick-arse and quite powerful editor. But like many in the editing world, I can just as comfortably sit at an Avid, or with Premier or Media 100 in front of me and get the job done quickly and efficiently because the have ALL the tools I need. The choice for me right now is to spend $300 - 400 on your incomplete 'solution' or $800 to upgrade my Adobe CS to the latest and greatest. It's relative chump change compared to what software editors used to cost so the decision really is not that hard.

All I am suggesting you do is treat your pro users with a little respect and address their concerns. It shouldn't be too hard because I'm sure you must have at least one employee there who can write a decent press release. And if it makes a difference, a lot of your pro users buy iPhones too you know.

Okay, I just did a quick comparison after downloading FCPX...and I am now more scared than I was initially. Thought there are some huge improvements, it really DOES look a lot like iMovie. It is a lot more than that UI wise, as I stated earlier, but the external resemblance is uncanny... Here are some screenshots. :(

In a year, nobody will argue that FCP isn't a pro app.

The fact is that there should be no "in a year." Apple knows that FCPX isn't a professional tool and they released it to appeal to a different audience. The updates that you think will make it a professional tool again aren't coming. They don't care about us, they care about what's going to make them the most money. No hard feelings, just good business.

Amazing. What a trainwreck.

Really?

It's one thing for someone to 100% blow the launch of FCPX by simply failing to say .... "3rd party application integration in development".

It's another thing to block negative reviews in the app store.

You're staff should be above that.

PS - Looking forward to python and XML capabilities .... and a new marketing team.

Haha - love it Mark. Can always count on you for the untarnished truth.

I'm one of the biggest Apple fans around but even I must admit, this couldn't have been what good ol' Steve had wanted or imagined ...

And damn, last person who needs all this extra stress is him. I know he's mega-rich, etc but he looked more skinny and frail than ever
during the last keynote. I want Steve to be healthy and around for at least another decade and hope he helps to right this FCPX wrong.

Havent the forums around the world just slaughtered the new FCPX. I've never seen such a beating up in my life. Apple have really really tripped up big.
So many post houses in the last 48 hours have just turned APPLE PRO anything off... and if not off... soon to be swapped with something else.
Theres no need to panic though, FCP7 will carry us all for a couple more years.. so life is still very good.

What's a bet though if MAC continue own this path of (who cares about PRO USERS), I bet all us MAC nutters working in TV land now will be back on high powered purpose build PC's in the next 5 years.
I for one am now looking at AVID again as a viable option into the future. Haven't touch a key for 7 years.. time to revisit an old play mate. Maybe it's more user friendly these days and the arrogance replaced with go getters.

Actually might call them right now... and see whats cooking.

Just been messing around with it. After taking the nasty iMovie looking cocktail dress off of FCPx, it's looking a lot better. There are still ridiculous consumer features cluttering up my app like some of the titles, but the performance is pretty astounding. I was able to add an effect and adjust the parameters in real time... WHILE THE CLIP WAS PLAYING. Impressed.

I really hope that Apple makes a statement soon to address some of these issues, or I will be requesting a refund as well. So much amazing engineering went into this app, it makes me sad that the project leads don't have a clue what it means to actually edit in the real world. Just cut the crap, give me EDL/XML/OMF/RED support, and I will be in love.

It's interesting, seems like Apple has really gone with the 90/90 rule, to support what 90% of users will want to do 90% of the time. I think FCP X will be great for many, but virtually all of us are in that other 10%, which is why the complaints are omnipresent.

What sucks is that we were encouraged to hold on and have faith for the last couple of years that this new version would retain it's top pro status.

Still, this could end up just being a big misunderstanding if they allow massive third party support and everyone can provide their own hooks in and out. Could be the best thing ever.

Unfortunately for the moment we only have what's in front of us, and it's virtually unusable for me as 80% of my work is multicam. And with no EDL/XML, I'm stuck as well.

Be interesting to see where this goes in the next few months.

Until then, I still have FCP7 for everyday use and Premeire kicking around somewhere. Even downloaded the free trial for Media 100 today! Been over 5 years since I last used that! ;-)

It's one thing for someone to 100% blow the launch of FCPX by simply failing to say .... "3rd party application integration in development".

Have you read Stu Maschwitz's post on www.prolost.com?

Sounds like Apple can't announce that "3rd party application integration is in development" because for most 3rd parties... it isn't yet.

Looks like Apple didn't bother to give Red Giant the time of day. After all the awesome plugins they made...

Here's his post:

"Final Cut Pro X Is Here

I’m downloading it now for the first time.

So is the rest of Red Giant Software.

In the past two months, Red Giant has cancelled two products and one appearance out of uncertainty regarding Final Cut Pro X’s support for the cool stuff we love to build for you guys to get your work done."

And then he gives a link to a product announcement (which I'm guessing is not FCP X based :) with "Anyone care for a drink?"

I'm not saying there won't be lots of good 3rd party stuff once the Python hooks are uncovered, etc. But wow, Apple isn't exactly giving 3rd parties any help right now!

I wonder if 3rd parties will jump in eagerly - in order to profit and be seen as heros who rescue this wayward app .... or if the insult and injury is just too severe and they are going to be reluctant to get involved with it at all.

Come on Apple - or at least Steve - let's hear a statement asap. Time to stop the bleeding ....
