I'm used to working with Adobe products for some time, recently I been searching and doing some research on how better tools than Premiere Pro. I saw that a lot of users are fan of FCP X.

So going back to my point:

- I'm having really low performance on FCP when playing back. Should I enable transcoding in the background? Do a Pro Res version?
- Are there any tips for grading? I usually grade in RCP and then cut in PP, I used to have Davinci but IMHO for the type of shooting I do I do not feel I need to invest so much time in grading.
- Any recommendations for FCPX and Red Cameras?

When I try to grade inside FCPX (because sometimes you don't want to go back to RCP) I saw that it look awful while trying to edit the metadata of Red.

Thanks and sorry for the beginners questions.

Best

create proxies for editing, turn off transcoding in background

Rodrigo whats your system specs?

Lots of factors when having playback issues.

Working with 4K DCI?
Working off a RAID?
Thunderbolt 2?

I myself dont use Proxies and/or Copy options.

I just use the originals.
I am sure they fixed the old update issues when going back to REDCine for RAW edits.

FCPX and RED has been the smoothest ride from day one and I work with all three NLEs daily.

I have a Mac Pro with 64GB and a Pegasus R6 with 12 TB (RAID) Thunderbolt

I didn't like the idea of creating proxies, I love that in PP or RCP I just put 1/4 and I have 0 issues in payback, it just happens in FCPX.

Is there any settings that I should remove?

New Mac Pro?

D500 or D700 model?

You have the latest RED APPLE WORKFLOW updates?

This link has some tips on changing the prefs and basically the same as changing the playback res.

I use a few variations of FCPX from 10.1.x to the latest and RED files has always been the smoothest for me.

nMP, 64GBRAM, D700 with varying Thunderbolt 2 RAIDs (Pegasus, Gtech and LaCie).

There are times when this is true from my experience but Ive had such great luck with the original files I dont bother.

For me its reverse, in Pp I have to use Proxies and in Avid I go all out with DNxHR :)

So for longer projects...you can create proxies overnight. It's blazing fast. For short/simple projects, just work directly within the native resolution timeline and adjust playback resolution to "better performance." Make sure you're storing/playing back off a raid array drive...that will help your speeds immensely.

Also, before you import all your clips, open them all up in RCX. In the RCX project, select all your thumbnails, right click, and choose "save RMD." That will save the RMD info. That way, during the grade, you can venture right back to RCX for a prelim grade, and they will instantly show up in FCPX. You should purchase the plugin Color Finale - it's what I use to grade all my personal stuff and is amazing!

I'm running on a 2012 MacBook Pro with the new FCPX and I love it. Proxies help with everything and it's super easy to do. I strongly recommend.

However, I'm running to this issue and I'm wondering if anyone has encountered it.... I can't seem to import 8K or 6.5K R3D files. FCPX just says no compatible files to import.

If anyone has any insight, that'd be helpful!

Justin, make sure you have the latest red driver and are on the latest fcpx, shouldn't be an issue once all is updated! If your not your only gonna be able to import up to 6K

Thanks Steve! Much appreciated! I'll see if updating the red drivers will fix it as I already have the latest FCPX.
