  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Pro 10 and R3D

Yeah I do. But I don't have FCP 7. I just have FCP 6 and FCP X. Do you think that might have something to do with it?
Actually FCP6 installs the codecs.
Not sure why it doesnt show up.
Try downloading the FCS Prokit for version 6 at Apple.
Might be hard to find.

So this tells me that R3D's will not be supported by Apple FCPX and PRORES is there only choice for us.

Bloody Arri's PRO RES Gamble is really paying off for them big time now. Rentals are mostly Alexa, everyone is working in PRORES everywhere...

If you cant beat them join em.

What a great pity. Looks like VHS just beat BETACAM again.

R3D is only one of many RAW formats to come. Arri's got their own RAW format and many others even including Canon and their DSLR video format are researching RAW technology.
It might be much ProRes right now, but I agree with Jim that everyone is going toward a RAW workflow and when that is more common then ProRes, it will be a must to be able to edit it native.
Interesting how FCP gets more closed off and Avid which has been criticized for being too close opens up more and more with each new release. ProRes also works flawlessly on Avid AMA, even 4444 from the Alexa runs great on a lesser system.

Seems that for now, if you want to work with r3d files for finishing, the route would be:
1. Transcode to light ProRes files for editing.
2. Import into FCPX and edit.
3. Export AAF via Automatic Duck ProExport.
4. Import that into Resolve 8 and relink to r3d files.
5. Grade and render the final.

I haven't tested this, but it seems the most available option in the short run.

BTW - I've got to believe ARRI is rethinking the ProRes choice. FCP X has started to de-emphasize some ProRes codecs, like LT. This has caused many pros to question Apple's long-term commitment to ProRes. ARRI's options could be DNxHD, CineForm, Sony SR or AVC-Intra. Of these, only DNxHD wouldn't involve cutting a deal with a camera competitor. I would really expect to see a DNxHD option by the end of the year, though that's pure speculation.

Huh? It's not "some ProRes codecs, like LT". LT is the only variant of ProRes which anyone could possibly say Apple is de-emphasizing in FCP X. ProRes in general is used heavily in FCP X. It's emphasized more there than in FCP 7, in fact. Unlike FCP 7, FCP X doesn't ever render back to source media formats like DVCPRO HD. There are four options for project rendering formats, and ProRes variants are three of them (the forth being uncompressed).

Are people really getting paranoid about ProRes support because one variant of it isn't available as a rendering format in FCP X? People seem to be going out of their way to find things to worry about here. LT always lived in a kind of bizarre area between Proxy and SQ anyway. Of the five ProRes variants, it was always the one with the least obvious use case, and I think the fact that Apple couldn't find a sensible place to use it in FCP X is just a demonstration of that.

Good thing about DNxHD is that it's open and free, it can be used everywhere with encoding and decoding. I'm just waiting for it to go resolution independent so that it could be used for 4K/5K and such.
But as for codec quality, it's the same as ProRes and it should have some advantages to ProRes when speaking post production workflow.

How about for transcoding Canon 5D and HDV footage into "optimized" media instead of ProRes? That's why Apple originally developed it with FCP7 and it saves a lot of hard drive space.

A prores module is already available ... Sound Devices Pix240. Once XML export arrives, FCP-X online/offline

Personally, I wouldn't consider LT high enough quality for that sort of 'online' use, and I guess Apple doesn't either. If you really want to save disk space, create proxies but not optimized media. That way you'll have even smaller and speedier files to edit with, but when you go to render out your sequence you'll have the full quality of the original footage.

Ive found a few minor issues with R3D and FCPX. Its minor to me but could be major to others.
We shot some live (Jazz band) footage using our RED MX.
Footage was set to 3840x2160 output from RCX using ProRes 4444.
As it turns our this res is not supported in FCPX.
For testing I went ahead with a higher res 4096x2160 within FCPX.
Works fine I can deal with it, but I would like to hear others input.
