Hi all. . .

I am wanting to know if there are any very recent developments on the IR+ND filter front. I have a set of Pancros, but I find they ghost terribly in some circumstances, so I'm wanting another IR-controlling ND filter choice that won't lead to mirrored ghosts in all my footage.

I had been using the Tiffen IR+ND filters, and liked them very much, but tests reported here on REDUser, as well as Tiffen's own statements on these filters, suggest that they will not solve the IR problem.

So, since the mirrored fronts of Pancros won't work for me, and the normal Tiffen IR+NDs apparently don't do the trick, can you suggest any filter solutions that don't have the Pancro mirrored face and might actually deal effectively with IR pollution?

I'd prefer a solution that is one filter only, rather than a stacked piece in front of regular ND filters, as I am terribly frightened by ghosts. (It probably goes back to my childhood. :-)

Thanks very much.

Stephen

At Abel we tested all of the available IR filter solutions and found the new Formatt filters the most effective for the RED One. We created a bundle of IR and ND filters that will solve all your filtering issues from no ND all the way up to 2.1 (7 stops) of ND. I've posted about it here on reduser and there is also information on our website's RED Store. Go to abelcine.com for more info.

Although I've heard the Tiffen IRND ($295) aren't effective with RED (confirmed by Evin) I thought that the Tiffen Hot Mirror IR+ND ($480) does in fact work well with RED.
Stephen, it's funny...I heard this same complaint about ghosting from Pancro today. Will look further into the Formatt vs Tiffen Hot Mirror IR+NDs as well...

Stephen,

I'm still puzzled with your Pancro ghost from your childhood :spidy:

I used their IR+ND 2.0 shooting very high contrast scene with and against the setting sun and I could't even remotely smell the little suckers.

OK:

1. What lens(es) and settings do you experience them with?
2. Any other filters present?
3. Lighting position, buffing, shades, etc...

The reason I am trying to dig down to it is two fold: firstly (selfish, of course) to avoid the problem myself and secondly (altruistic) to try to help you bust your ghosts

Thanks, Mitch. . .

I will definitely looking into that Formatt solution.

Pawel, it is probably just us, but we can't seem to avoid the ghosts with Pancros. Nikon lenses. Redrock micro mattebox (and it isn't the problem, because we got the problem even when we wrapped the entire mattebox up with duvateen!). No other filters of any sort used. It's very strange.

My current thinking is that your ghosts may be attracted to certain types of coating of the front lens element and/or curvature of the front lens element. When filtered light hits the front lens element, stray rays are reflected whilst straight rays are transmitted. This is how coating works. Now, if the reflected once hit the mirror from the opposite side: you got a ghost!

If this is the case, you are right, there may be little you can do except using IR filter that is not a mirror. Masks can help a fair bit, shades and french flags can help, but it may just be not enough to get the ghost out :holloween:

Pawel... so you're thinking is that using Nikon lenses with the Pancros may be the issue? Who'd have thunk that?

Geez. . .

But aren't all lenses curved at the front element? I've never actually beheld a cine lens before, so I can say for sure, but all still lenses I've ever seen certainly are.
