Hi!
I would like to know if there's any filter to make easier to have sun flares in camera.

Thanks!

Filters don't do anything about flares. They appear when a light source enters the lens directly- either the sun or a studio light. You can certainly make more flares by pulling off your matte box and/or aiming lights directly into the lens. Though this can get out of hand- like Star Trek.

there's not any filters that create "more" flares that i know of. there's a couple i can think of that alter your flares though:
a stroke filter for instance achieves "fake" anamorphic flares.
or filters like the black pro mist that make your highlights bleed into your shadows and apparently alter the look of you flares too.
(on a side note: be aware of the fact that two filters stacked might reflect flares and hot spots. for example a nasty reflection of the sun in your sunset shot because you used two nd's).

...and i liked the amount of flares on star trek

There is a filter called a Streak Filter which is a bunch of lines etched into the glass. When lights or the sun appear in shot they will cause lines of flare similar to what people associate with anamorphic lens flares, but they will be the color of the light instead of the blue coloration known in Panavision anamorphics. There is a Blue Streak filter available from Vantage (maker of the Hawk anamorphics) for creating a blue-tinted flare for this, but it is very expensive.

Does anyone know of any way to replicate a streak (or is it stroke?) filter in post? I can't see why it wouldn't be possible...

I'm pretty sure Knoll Light Factory can do this. The Vantage filters mentioned aren't for sale, they're a rental-only item. I know because I e-mailed them and asked, begged, and pleaded for a purchase price to no avail. =(

I like the stylized look the flares in Star Trek added. However, in the cave scene when Kirk is running from the monster and there is a lens flare, I was like, really? What source of light in a CAVE is causing that flare? :P

So yeah, at times it was excessive.

yeah - erm - i ment streak not stroke - of course...

ian - magic bullet "looks" for after effects creates some neat streaks too. just be aware, when doing flares in post, you should controll your highlights on set (or be willing to rotoscope a bunch).

They are for sale. We talked to Vantage about selling them in the States, but they were so expensive that we could not justify importing them. Don't recall the price, but it was very high. Vantage said that they were quite difficult to manufacture, which I can believe.
