Forgive a laypersons ignorance, but is there a huge advantage to 4x5.65 filters over 4x4? The price difference seem to be substantial.

I'm assuming 4x4 will cover smaller lenses, like cinemodded stills, and I'm guessing CP2s?

What don't they cover?

I own a complete set of Contax primes, so I'm guessing 4x4 will be fine for my needs. But I imagine they won't work on half the lenses I'd like to rent - RPPS, Masterprimes, big zooms, etc.

Any feedback would be more than welcome.

You'll be fine with 4x4 and Contax. I'm using the exact same setup.

Only time 4x5.6 have an advantage is when using grads, and you are pushing it to the limit.

Funny you say that, because my biggest interest was grads. Will 4x4 grads still work on my Contax you think? How about the Tokina 11-16?

I was even considering some 16mm primes, like an 8mm. How will that fare?

As Martin suggested - 4x4 will limit how "edgy" you can get with your grads. If you are on a wide lens (described above) and only want the grad to push in a little - you may start to feel the edge of your filter push in to frame. I'd splurge for the 4x5.6.

Awesome. Fantastic advice. Thanks so much. Would you recommend this for filters across the board, not just grads? Say NDs, promists, classic softs, etc? Just play safe and get the 4x5.6?

Its worth investigating. The shape of 4x5.6 placed horizontally will more readily cover wide lenses (closer to the aspect ratio). So worth testing a 4x4 on your widest lens to make sure you have coverage. Obviously grads would want to work vertically.

Great. Test I shall!
