  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Filmmaking - The RED Way

I'm thinking about hosting a periscope session or free webinar...what would you guys like it to include? Shooting, gimbal setup/operating, gear I use, operating RED's, editing, color correcting? Want to tailor it to you guys, my RED community. You guys (and gals) have done so much for me, so I want to give back when I can.

WOW! Thatd be amazing.. Please do that!!! I would be very much interested in ALL that you mentioned!! :D But, if id need to select, id be really interested in editing, color correcting and of course the gimbal setup and operating! That would be really lovely! Thank you so much Chris! Really looking forward to it! :)

haha! Ok...I think that would have to be several sessions but I can do that if you guys want it all.

Great work.. very impressive.

Congrats.

Thanks Mitch!

Color Correction.

As I have said countless times, I'm not a colorist, but I can walk you thru how I grade. It's so easy.

Wonderful reel. Love the edit too.

Thanks Brandon! We have to get together again soon!

Maybe that's not your forte but your color looks great. I love it when someone, who isn't a colorist, is able to grade their own footage and it look awesome. Those are the tips and tricks we all need. I love everything I have seen of your, Chris, so any insight into what you do and how you do it is very welcomed.

I too am interested in coloring, camera operation and lighting. I love it when I find out something has been lit with available light and it looks amazing. or even a minimal lighting setup. God bless Shane Hurlbut, but I typically don't have the schedule for his elaborate setups.

Agree! Color correctin would be my choice nr.1 aswell :)

Thanks Adam. I'm going to probably host several since a lot of people want different things.

Haha. Yea it seems a lot of you guys want to know how I grade. I edit within FCPX and grade with Color Finale (a $100 plugin for FCPX). Sometimes I'll take the clip first into RCX, but that's rare.

Nice work Chris.

For those interested in Color Correction……I'd suggest Steve Huffish….The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction.

Here's a little test/game in color perception. LINK

Thanks Corey!

Beautiful work.. Im happy and sad at the same time. I see what the epic can do in the right hands but at the same time don´t have the competence at the moment to pull it off like that :) ):

Yes feeling the same way here with my Scarlet #00123 Dragon upgrade which was very possibly THE LAST DRAGON! upgrade or very close. Only had it about three months and the upgrade has opened up a huge can of software problems that have made me question my very sanity for not going with the EPIC MX trade in instead!

I am just terrible with RED CINE X right now as I have spent most of my time in CS6 and FCP 7 etc. where I'm pretty good. If I was to ask for any specific help first off, I think it would be in codifying HOW TO COLOR/TRANSCODE from 6K to 5K? I'm working hard at searching out all the best red cine x tutorials out there, would welcome a book as well. Thank you so much for reaching out to us!

Nice work Chris, as always. Wondering if we might know what you are using for a color grading monitor/system?
I know you use FCPX and Color Finale generally, but by system, I mean any special outboard gear feeding the monitor...OR do you just do it on your computer monitor????

Thanks again Scot. What's funny is I'm doing the exact opposite of what most colorists do. For all of my editing/grading, I just use my 13"mbpr...that's it! I figure most people are viewing content on iPhones, iPads, macs, etc., that it's really a great platform to base grading off of. Again, most colorists will shame me for that, but it has worked for me and I've gotten amazing feedback on my grading. hehe Who would have thought? haha

This helps too as it's exactly the same for me with RCX and FCP X! Glad to hear I'm doing something right so far as your tech goes! Thank you again!
