Scarlet comes to us under $3,000 -

Built in - no fuss zoom lens no problem

set up further back from your actor and then zoom in -
(don`t use the zooming part unless your into that feel)

You can still get a shallow depth of focus this way, it takes a creative camera person but looks great.

I`m buying Scarlet for sure and a new Mac pro to edit.

Thank you RED team for the high rez picture at an affordable price. :)

Absoloutely my friend..

I always thought RED ONE was the camera that was going to change everything. I was wrong. I am convinced that this is the camera that will change the very definition of film-making. (And its not for the reasons you think).

I am Rejoicing! Yippy! for me its more than just more affordable, its more inline with the type of films I like and make.

Bring on the new, new, new, new wave!

(fluf post, I REFUSE TO APOLOGISE!)

Agreed (though I admit, it took me a few hours to come to that conclusion).

My brother-in-law brought it to my attention that these films were shot with super 16 (format size comparable to 2/3"):

half nelson
leaving las vegas
the believer
nine lives
the motorcycle diaries
primer
the station agent

Of course, in the case of Scarlet, you can replace the 16mm grain with 3K.

The idea of having a fixed zoom lens sounds like less glass to lug around and less hassle to me. Like you said, if you want shallow DOF for a given shot, just make the appropriate adjustments. Those adjustments (when needed) beat the hell out of having to fool with a 35mm adapter... with which I have no doubt spent plenty of time fooling.

As a budding, small-budget filmmaker, this camera seems to be just about perfect.

I can't believe you guys.

Do you really believe that a $3,000 pocket camera will do what a $100,000 cinema camera will do? Go dreaming. The RED ONE does that. But still for at least $25,00 if you equip it with the right stuff.

$3,000 means compromises. A lot of compromises. The glass has always been the most important factor in a filmcamera. And good glass already costs much more as the whole Scarlet. So keep dreaming. This camera will be comparable to 2/3" professional camcorders at most. Not to the CineAlta's or the RED ONE. Impossible. Unless they are willing to loose $10,000 on each.

Just out of curiosity, huh?

dieseljunkie, sorry, I may have accidentally edited your post instead of hitting the reply button! Woops! Here is my reply:

In terms of glass, be prepared to change the way you think about motion picture glass.. RED has given you 30,000$ glass for a fraction of the price with their latest lens line up. With Jims passion for optics and advancements in optics design, I'm willing to bet that the lens on this thing will blow you away.

Acehole, it is well established fact that big dynosauruses are over-lived by small mammals.

Anyway Red already did it once, I wish the hackney none believing folk would leave us to our Red zealotry. I don't care if in 5 years I look like a fool for following the messiah... I mean Jim, out into the desert of digital cinema cameras. I don't care at all, I would rather have hope that the fine people at Red are trying really hard to make cameras this small that are extremely capable, and above all meet there own expectations.

At last a "respectful thread"! I too am thrilled with Scarlet and though it will never be all things to all people, it certainly has the potential to score big with documentary people, the run and gun crowd (my area),the wedding and private video companies etc. Great films were indeed made around the world on 16mm and super 16 and many are still using their Arris and Eclairs but the big money will always have big tech.
I just hope I can squeeze through the next year with my DVX100b and nothave to buy an interim camera.

Funny, I thought the most important thing about a camera was what's in front of the lens

And good glass already costs much more as the whole Scarlet.

Maybe. But if price = quality, then RED must make pretty bad cameras...

I'm sure they're not going to make a camera with such amazing specifications and put a piece of junk in front of the sensor.

Sorry - nobody has ever made a zoom lens good enough to blow anybody away. A zoom is always a compromise. I have a rather nice Angenieux, but it does not come anywhere near a prime.

Scarlet is for the "I will make it happen filmmaker"

Scarlet is for the "I will make it happen filmmaker"

You know who you are -
Not the jack of all trades master of none, that doesn`t fly well with a narrative film. Your that specific type that will hire just a few prod. people and work with what you have at hand, lots and lots of preproduction. Rewriting and rewriting that script to make it hot. The filmmaker that can`t compete with the "big budget hollywood film" so you make the indie "they can`t take this kind of a chance but I can" type of film. Go there. Scarlet is for us !!! Its going to be a new level. :pirate:

ghostcar, you should post here more often. You get it.

Well, what's in front of the lens is very important, but I like to think that the monkey behind the camera is pretty important too. There will be very many talented and skillful people making some great motion pictures with Scarlet.
