Hi Folks

We've got a shoot coming up in Oman and Baku (Azerbaijan) and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or advice on filming in these locations?

We're travelling from the UK and may either take our own camera with us or hire locally in Dubai and Baku.

Plan is to drive to Oman from Dubai, but I'm trying to find out what permits/permission we require to shoot there? Filming will take place on private property in Oman so this should simplify things. Anyone had problems with customs crossing the border into Oman with filming equipment?

Once our Oman shoot is complete, plan is then to travel on to Baku in Azerbaijan and I'm really struggling to find any information on filming here. Again, if anyone has been or has information they can share it would much appreciated.

Both projects are for oil/gas companies so this may either simplify of complicate things!

Best wishes

Scott

I was shooting in Oman years ago, we flew in after shooting in Abu Dhabi and were quite frustrated at customs. Since Oman is not on the A.T.A Carnet system our Carnet was not much help and they wanted us to make a 10% of total value cash deposit to take our equipment into the country and that was clearly not going to happen. After haggling for about an hour we finally convinced the customs agent that the total value of our two Digital Betacams (this really was years ago) plus professional photo kit was around $1000 and ended up making a deposit of $100 total! Of course we never saw our "deposit" upon leaving the country but i figured the $100 was less than we might have paid any customs agency to import our equipment and we were in and could shoot. Other than that experience Oman was a fantastic country and I would love to go back, but as i mentioned this was quite some time ago and much has certainly changed.

I am sure it will be a great adventure - good luck - Brian

Grew up in Oman; it's a gorgeous country. Sadly, haven't had much opportunity to shoot there (besides some large format stills a few years back, which I didn't have any trouble with). Hope you have a great shoot.

Thanks Jason

Yes, Oman looks really beautiful and I'm looking forward to filming there. I've heard that many take a chance when crossing the border from Dubai and don't declare their equipment - makes me nervous though! Other option is we shoot on a Canon 5D and play "tourist" but I'd really like to take along our new Epic.

I've now got a contact in Oman and have asked for further information so I'll keep everyone posted.

Best wishes

Scott

As mentioned above, neither Oman nor Azerbaijan are carnet countries unfortunately. Recently the UAE joined the system, however, in case that is of any help to you in your travels in that area of the world. http://www.atacarnet.com/advisory/uae-update-abu-dhabi FYI there is an ATA Carnet discussion group on LinkedIn that would include discussions of taking equipment into non-carnet countries temporarily if you ever want to post a question there (ATA Carnet User & Discussion Group). Best of luck on your project.
