  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

filmback dimensions

See the technical data section at this Depth of Field chart page for image plane (a.k.a. camera aperture) dimensions. The link is for 4K 16:9 shooting mode, but you can change that using the links in the "Other formats" section.

Note that this is theoretical data based on camera specifications. We've had some trouble matching RED settings in 3ds Max, Maya seemed to work somewhat better.

You also have to keep in mind that image projection (a.k.a. mapping) is not linear for many lenses, most notably wide angle and fish eye lenses. You should take some reference measurements to match the camera/lens field of view to your Maya settings. Or have someone do it if you don't have access to the RED ONE.

One px is 0,0054mm wide on the Red Sensor, this was posted somewhere here a while back if you muliply it with 4096px wide you´ll get 22,11mm sensor with, same works vor the vertical px count.

your link says:
Image plane dimensions:
22.12 x 12.44 mm (ø25.38 mm)

however the red site says:
24.4mm x 13.7mm (Super35mm)

so which one is correct?

Both are. :pinch:

The Mysterium sensor actually has 4520 usable pixels across. However, RED One 4K as we can shoot now is a crop of this area at 4096 pixels across. So, 24.4mm x 13.7mm theoretically usable sensor area. Currently 4K 16:9 is a 22.11mm x 12.44mm area.

We will soon (hopefully) have a near-4.5K mode with a 2.4:1 aspect ratio and a resolution of 4480x1866, which would have an imaging area of 24.19mm x 10.07mm

Nice one, Jon.

You should probably add the 4520x2540 active pixel area. Also there will eventually be the "4.5K" 2:40:1 mode I mentioned above. Hopefully with the next firmware build. :whistling:
