  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Film versus Panavision Genesis

So, David, basically with your night and low-light shots on Stay Cool, you have very limited latitude in terms of bringing up exposure, saturation, etc... is that what you are saying?

I remember I looked at one of your night exterior (a street scene) screen caps from Stay Cool. I accidentally viewed the captured still on a monitor that is much, much brighter than a typical monitor, and I could see a lot of noise in that shot. (On my regular monitors, it looked fine.) Because I shoot long-exposure night astro stuff on my DSLR, I am very familiar with this type of noise. It's definitely something that I worry about with digital low-light shooting.

On the other hand, the new Canon Digic V cameras are said to have incredible, almost game-changing low-light, low-noise capabilities. And Jim has certainly mentioned that Monstro and perhaps Mysterium X will have similar low-noise performance. So I guess being patient is all we can do. :calm:

Since most of the noise is in the blue channel only, it really depends on how you are going to color-correct the image in terms of dealing with underexposed footage. I think this is one reason why people are getting such varied noise results with the RED when working at 500 ASA instead of 320 ASA. Even my own tests have not been consistent in this regards -- it really is affected by color temp and color-correction decisions.
