Wayne. I second your recommendation on "Predestination".

There's a good crop out of Oz this year, and W.A. in particular.

Unless you already caught it, the film would have got past you as its short season of five screens has ended. It was "The Reckoning". Interestingly, on the end credits both ARRI and RED are mentioned.

Already had its run is "These Final Hours", part of which was shot up here in my stamping ground of Roleystone and on a property I once stayed overnight a few times as a small kid.

One yet to come is "Son of a gun".

One more, part of which was shot in my old school in Roleystone, is "Paper Planes".

In post, shot in Thunder Bay, Canada with significant input from W.A. cast and crew and for release in early 2005 is "The Pineville Heist".

Predistination is absolutely worth a viewing. Shot in Melbourne Australia by the very talented Ben Nott on film. Probably too smart a film for mainstream audiences. Sheer joy to watch sophisticated science fiction.

We had a writers festival here on the weekend, and I attended one of the workshops by a uni lecturer and script writer. He mentioned that there were several new Australian films we probably had never heard of, A real shame. It got me thinking, if we only had a screen at each megaplex that showed new good Australian films for $10 round robin through out the week, that would be a great improvement. Having a video advertising screen in a foyer for Australian films would be a further improvement. They want people to come to the movies more, but they keep showing the same films across local screens for up to months a season, with maybe one or two people in some sessions. I often have trouble finding anything to watch because it is the same movies over and over, and I've seen the ones I want to see. It is ridiculous, I can find better movies at the video store unreleased. The staff at these places are just as mind boggled at these decisions.

Hmm, the strategy:

- Retire movies to fewer screens and or sessions as they become unpopular, to pack more people in each session, rather than give them screens in every theatre with full days of sessions.

- Use the space freed up to put more good movies on, and good local content sessions.

- Amounts of sessions for a movie is based on how many people will come to sessions, too keep the number per session at profitable levels).

- Have a screen and foyer video advertising for good local movies at $10 (which is also used for movies if not enough people come to sessions, as above).

I like the story line and the script. It reminds me of the workshop I did. I've ignored scripts as I want to do novels, but script writing is so easy. However, the more I listen to the stories of dealing with publishers, producers and editors, the more bastardised the industry seems to have become. You hopefully have written good work, then you pass it onto a poncey publisher that looks for something for short term profit that sounds good on the shelf next to Harry Potter or whatever HAS been trending (past tense). If you get through that process, then they make demands to fit the genre subtype or somebody else's popularity, you get passed to an poncey editor that hacks into the quality of your work to reduce valuable word count space, but they want to book 1/3rd bigger also, but caring less about the valuable quality of words used. They want to change the title to something I'll fitting or irrelevant, to make it sound better, and pass your work onto the poncey art department to slap together a cover that has very little to nothing to do with the book or characters in complete bastardisation. In script writing it is similar, the poncey producer demands all his changes, the poncey director demands all his changes without details or directions that might be better than any filming he will ever do, and the poncey actors do it their way to add their "skill". All back to front, no wonder people self publish, and try to put together their own productions, all these demons thinking they're God. We have seen many times writer directors producers put together the best TV productions for over 20 years now compared to the factory versions. If you have a good person they can guide the whole process to become a stallion, not a camel a horse designed by a committee).

For everybody that is not that good, find a good publisher, editor, producer, or director.

Yep this is a huge film & not just for the cinematography (shot on Alexa). Original storyline and award winning performances (personally I think academy award winning, but will never get a look in ) & all done on a tiny budget and not a superhero in sight.

Right now there's a few Oz films on the horizon which are worth keeping an eye out for ....and this isn't including the huge & iconic "Mad Max/ Fury Road "

Wish I could find a place to see it. DVD release next year I guess?

Well, they should release it in the US, definitely remarkable on such a small budget and quick film (but philosophical scfi talk is easy to extensively rehearse before hand). The sound track was a bit muffled and some of it low tech (but so was Gandhi), but a academy award why not, Ethan's character was impressive.

I read $5.3 million for a three film deal. He, he, this is interesting

Wayne.

Related to a muffled dialogue, were you sitting dead-centre in the cinema?

Two of the auditoriums at my local cinemaplex have voice channel nulls in the centre three or four seats for several rows in the natural field-of-view distance from the screen.

I find it best in those cinemas to park the bronze about seven or eight seats to one side or the other of centre in front to mid-rows.

Always try to set at a natural wide field Robert, but never had this problem. The sound did not distract much, the movie is great. Maybe it is our theatre (who showed heaven in earth out of focus and alien versus predator with gamma turned up to make blocks grey when I saw them).

I wish they would make the new Matrix films here again. Latest is the area here is under possible consideration for the next Pirates of the Caribbeans.

Is there any sites devoted to Australian films? Maybe we need a "network of Australian movie screens", that will devote some screen to me to Australian films (one session showing out of ten to one out of five. Which would add up to one screen here).

Coming to US theaters in January.

Proud of the boys that made it. :)

Micheal and Peter Spirig.

Local kids when I first met them when making a cheap ZOMBIE film. Helped them push start there old van down the road on there way home from filming.... made me laugh all the way home.
They where living and breathing films day in day out, spent every last cent, They really deserve credit for there efforts and I think this film will throw them into a great position in Hollywood circles.

They have proved after this film that they are now the real deal.

Ben Nott who shot it is real star as well.

Looking forward to it. I thought Daybreakers was well crafted and a lot of fun.
