Film fading to black

There is an interesting article in the Creative COW I received today. It's not their proclamation that film is slowly fading from the high end production field. We have been aware of that for some time. It's the fact that, in the article, Red Digital is almost totally ignored.

I have a feeling that you would need to take out an ads space to be mention in there.

RED does not advertise.

As far I'm concern the Cow can go drink some more coolaid.

We are part of the Digital Revolution, Film is not our enemy.

Film is our friend because of it it's cost and complexities.

Hehe

It's pretty obvious why the Creative Cow article doesn't mention RED much. It's basing its conclusions on the fact that all of the 'old guard' are transitioning to digital from film. RED isn't going to make an interesting interview on that argument since it's obvious they're going to be arguing for a digital future regardless of reality. On the other hand you have someone like Arri or Aaton saying that they aren't moving many new film cameras and you've got a persuasive article.

Right now digital movie making is coming alive, but there is still this digital or film argument. This happened 10 years ago in stills, today the debate in stills is over. 10 years from now there will be almost no celluloid used, in fact probably sooner. This will be because digital will be far superior to film by then. There will be no argument left.

Clearly you haven't met the folks who prefer LP's over CD's and other more advanced digital audio. (DVD Audio etc ...)

Film will be around in some way forever.

Of course ... much like a still photographer who shows up with a film camera today, people will think its an oddity.

They just like the cover art : ) seriously though, yes there will always be some artistist who use film for some esoteric reason, at least while the support for it is there. What i was getting at is soon digial will out perform film in every way so that there will only be pros and no cons to digital production, the game will be over. Of course we may need global shutter sensors, some color tweaks, dynamic range improvements and the such but it's only a matter of time.
