Film and Digital experiments at Pinewood

Joe Dunton BSC and his remarkable rig containing 18 cameras.

"The BSC in co-operation with the recently created Image Forum and the financial
assistance of Skillset completed last week five days of evaluating methods of capture
of film and digital images on a controlled set in Pinewood.
On the final day eighteen cameras were used on an exterior rig especially designed for
the occasion by Joe Dunton BSC. This is believed to be the greatest number of cameras
test shooting the same shot simultaneously on different cameras ever recorded.
....

The film cameras Super 35 and 16mm (Arri 435's, Arri 416's, Aaton Penelope) used four
different film stocks from Fuji and Kodak. Alongside were tested the Panavision Genesis,
the ARRI D-21, the Sony F35, the Red and Thomson Viper, Silicon Imaging 2k, Sony 900R,
Panasonic 3700, Sony PMW EX-3 and the Panasonic HVX 201."

if i am correct - then - no it's not. check this video

made by ZBIG RYBCZYNSKI in 80s. if i remember correctly 24 cameras were used. if someone patient needs to count - it's pretty easy - just count how many different angles were shown until "movement" goes 360 deg.

all the best

filip

p.s.

btw, he was (RYBCZYNSKI) SOOOOO close to discover "bullet time" in 80s, but...

ok.

mea culpa.

filip

p.s. so the new record will be 19?

It was not shooting of a commercial, music spot or what else and it was just a test about all those cameras involved.

Interesting... But fair?... As each camera has diffenrent optical choices (2/3 zoom or digiprime, MP, Canon Glass...), postproduction needs (r3d direct native support (without RGB intermediate step) = only Scratch possible). Shown on 4k digital projector or on fim? Wich positive (Fuji/Kodak)... How was the down processing done from 30p to 24p for the Canon 5D...? ... the list is still long.

There surely will be some mesurable objective criterions but some gaps will make the company/users argue about the use of their tools.

But it is a nice performance.

Maybe they skipped the IP and scanned the negative. No need to project when you get an 8k scan. Would certainly be a more apples to apples comparison if you went straight from the negative to bits.
