hi all
scary subject, no? a new user to redcine-x (and fairly new to working with red files in post - i'm a commercial avid editor) i recently got a pile of epic files and found that my avid (mc 5.5) doesn't like them, hence redcine, which i am beginning to like. possibly. here's what seems to have happened: working to transcode these epic files to DNxHD175x (i'm in a 1080p/23.98 seq) my first pass was painless, though i missed the "restrict smpte levels" switch and had to redo because of the old low blacks/high whites issue. retranscoding the final cut to do a color pass i found that one card was not populating the bin, so i checked the folder. folder seemed fine, subfolders all there, but when i checked within the subfolders there were no r3d files! every file from every subfolder was missing, nor were they to be found elsewhere. all other cards/folders were untouched. all of the missing file folders had a "date modified" timestamp of approximately when i started my redcine session that morning. my guess is that somehow the files got into the trash, and i do remember cleaning up some old mxf files and emptying the trash so they likely got trashed then. luckily i can easily get the data from that card overnighted, i'm working from a cloned drive, and i also have my previous transcodes, so it wasn't the horrible disaster that it could have been. but i'd sure like to know what dumb-ass thing i did for that to happen.
any ideas?
cheers
bruce

Did you delete them in the file browser within RCX?
If you select clips in the file browser and press delete a dialog pops up which says "Are you sure you want to move the selected items to the trash?" with Yes/No buttons. If you choose yes it will move the selected clips to the trash.

i did NOT knowingly delete anything from the browser, though i could possibly have hit a wrong keystroke combo. but there was NO "are you sure" dialog or anything that i saw, and it was only after struggling for a while to find out why one card of media wouldn't populate that i discovered that the files were not there.

RCX does not have the ability to delete files without the dialog. Is it possible you deleted them when cleaning up your MXF files?

Also, which version of RCX are you running?

i found in the past i could get the old red rushes on windows to "zero" all the filesizes of my r3ds if i deleted the proxies and later regenerated them with said app. files weren't deleted, but the file system misreported sizes, all zero (edit, including r3ds, which surely should only be open for "reading" during proxy gen to acquire frame offsets for the proxy?..anyway) . fixable with "chkdsk /f". hard to say exactly what the cause was but it was a repeatable problem.

obviously redrushes is innocent in this situation..and does anyone use the quicktime proxies anymore? can/does redcine-x generate them? ..anyway, the file handling routines during proxy gen. would be on my suspect list for historical reasons

i am running build 506, which i believe is the most recent. i definitely believe that the r3d files were physically deleted when i emptied the trash whilst cleaning up previous mxf's, but it is HOW they got there that mystifies me. check trash before deleting is something i often do, but not always. conrad, for a moment i considered that the files might be "invisible" and not actually gone - getting info on the master folder and the subfolders all reported 0k - but it was an easy matter to get that one folder sent to me and i did that instead of running this down in the heat of battle. i'd love to hear more.
cheers and thanks for the tips folks!

Build 506 is very old I'm afraid. You want to be using a Pro build. You can find it on the support site under the Beta tab.

Cheers,
David

thanks david, i wondered about that. being new to red in general, i've been going by what i can find online as it seems most timely, and there is not much talk about redcine pro. will check it out.
