  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fiilex Lighting

I was primarily using these for interiors on a feature that needed to have a Naturalistic feel. They suited my lighting style for this particular film extremely well. That being said - Honestly I would like a 9 light head based on these for the price of 6 of the units for instance - pushing them through a 4x frame or bouncing them. I primarily was using them as a bounce source or through a 4x frame and found them adequate - but trying to push through a poly silk like in most chimeras might not give the needed punch. (echoing Paul and Matt's sentiments) That being said, I plan on keeping them, as I found them to be like a 3 head Arri 300 kit that has equally good light quality, and very accurate color in Daylight or tungsten mode. I felt like it just "filled the sensor" in a very appealing way with good color that felt super good and real. I returned the Flex Jet P200 because it really had NO output (sorry to sound negative there) Maybe something with an element 4x the size of the current element pushing through an ellipsoidal lens would have the kind of punch we all are hoping for? Just theorizing. Anyway - can't wait to see what they put out next.

Comparing these to regular fresnels, what sort of output would we be looking at? Are they comparable to a 300w Tungsten Fresnel? A 650w Fresnel?

Just looking at the published photometrics for the p360, it looks to be about equivalent to a 150W fresnel, looking at Arri's tungsten fresnel photometrics. However it seems Arri's 300 plus is about twice as efficient as their 150 so its hard to compare directly to both of them. The P360 appears to have about half the output of the Arri 300 Plus but twice the ouput of the Arri 150. So its about 150W equivalent if you had a 150W bulb in a fixture with the efficiency of the Arri 300 Plus. Now it makes sense why I've always found Arri 150 Fresnels always seem to have less punch than half a 300...

Anyway this all may make some sense since the Fiilex P360 has a maximum power of 90W but is color changable, so it is possibly only drawing around 45W or less at full tungsten or full daylight, and high CRI LEDs usually have around ~4x the luminous efficiency of tungsten, so I would expect an equivalent output around 150w-200w of tungsten.

Does the Fiilex have 90W worth of emitters? Or is it 180W of emitters of which half output is always used to maintain consistent brightness through the adjustable CCT range? What is the power draw at full tungsten or full daylight? Can you double the output by running it at 4300K?

Ah, that would explain it. That's why I tend to prefer straight daylight LEDs, just to get as much punch as possible from them.

If it's colour switchable, would that mean the light roughly equals the output of a 300w fresnel when set to 4500 kelvin (i.e. all the LEDs on full power - so you get the full 90w draw)?

They look really good for interior work. I am tempted to buy a 3-piece kit even though I don't need one right now.

If they release units with higher output and same form factor I am definitely getting some.

The more lights I look at, the better these look....yes, output is a little limited but they are so small, light and cheap that you can simply use one ( or 2 or 3) instead of one bigger light....of course sometimes that does not work...but I recently rigged 4 of these up in one softbox and the light quality and output is by far better then any other solution I could find.....and I powered them with Vlocks....
if they had one stop more light, they would be perfect....
