Hi,

We just recently this trailer for a local film festival:

Link: 1K Version (H.264).

The idea was to show how the French Film gets from France to Biel (Switzerland) as the festival exclusively shows French films.

We had VERY minimal light available, mainly because of budget restraints :(. We shot with Zeiss Standard lenses (12, 24, 40mm). All shots with the can attached to the camera are shot with the 12mm.

Unfortunately, two days before shooting my RED broke and had to be sent back for repair. Extremely luckily, Damien Molineaux's (earthling) RED was available on such short notice and we were still able to shoot the trailer with a RED. THANK YOU SO MUCH Damien!!!

The trailer got printed on Kodak Premiere and it looks absolutely gorgeous!! CC was done in Color and was a bit of a pain as a few things such as animating masks didn't behave as you'd expect them to.

Enjoy!

Super nice concept and look.
What happened to your Red?

Hey,

Thanks for the kind words! It was an immense load of work - we were only two guys... Sébastien Kühne (www.form.li) and me.

The first shot is a matte painting I did, it was shot as a panorama with the 360precision head - which is great tool - and the Canon 5D. There are about 6 layers to create the illusion of parallax.

During tests two days prior to shooting we suddenly started getting the Codec Fault error and it wouldn't go away, no matter what we tried it was no use... I got it back within 10 days while being on another shoot in Monte Carlo :), so it wasn't too bad. But I still don't know what caused the error...

Camille - that was a wonderful piece. Thanks for sharing. This is the kind of work I hope to be able to do some day. Just perfect in every aspect. I'd absolutely LOVE to see a breakdown of the opening shot if you have the time and energy (and permissions) to share.

Thanks man! I don't think I'll have the time to put together a breakdown of the shot, but here's a before/after. Basically I just put the shot together in photoshop how I wanted it (without lighting effects, so I was still able to see things, because the final shot is so dark) then I started masking out the layers and wondering why buildings in Paris must have so many damn chimneys sticking out...:)

Then I just painted in / cloned whatever was needed due to parallax from the camera move... Pretty straight forward in fact... If you look closely there's a few perspective errors, but we just didn't have to time to make a perfect matte painting. It's actually quite surprising though, with how much you can get away with...

Oh, and the panorama was actually shot from the Sacre Coeur, which in the painting is on the hill to the right... we shot the Sacre Coeur from on top of Notre Dame :). The Eiffel tower is a 3D rendering...
