Update Aug 08 2014 - see newer posts starting here for 2015 open call info!

Hi forum,

greetings from Finland - I'm the co-head of Loikka, Finland's annual dance film festival, held in Helsinki for the 7th time from April 3rd to 6th 2014. As a Red shooter myself, I share the pain about not having enough avenues to actually present the 4K+ material we shoot in all of its full visual glory. So, we're going to eat our own cooking here and try to create some new opportunities for everyone, maybe going a tiny way towards bringing about that 4K revolution we talk and daydream about.

For its 2014 edition, Loikka festival seeks dance films that are mastered and screened at 4K resolution.
We hope to be able to put together at least one 4K screening at a state-of-the-art cinema in Helsinki, Finland during our next festival, but this is contingent on us receiving enough great material to make it happen. You've asked for the channel, so here it is - bring the content!

As far as financial rewards or grand prizes, we can't offer any - but we will get your work shown as it deserves to be seen before an enthusiastic international audience consisting of the general public, dance and film enthusiasts as well as professionals in both fields. As a further incentive, we're waiving the festival entry fee for 4K films.

So what's a dance film, then? Our definition is pretty relaxed. Any genre, style technique or length… it's all good. Heck, if you have the world's coolest BMX video set to music, maybe we'll stretch the definition to encompass it. Looking forward to what you come up with.

The screening format will be 4K DCP, with previews as a full-res media file (H.264 or similar). For details, please visit the festival website at http://www.loikka.fi and our special technical categories page at http://www.loikka.fi/3d-4k.

For any questions or comments, feel free to post to this thread, PM or follow my sigs for my e-mail. Our call for entries is officially open until September 30th 2013, but in case you miss it (or have a piece in production that won't be completed until later), don't worry about it and by all means do get in touch anyway.

All the best - looking forward to hearing from you all!

Cheers
Thomas

Nice! This is a great idea and perfect opportunity. I'll spread the word as much as I can, and I already have several film/dance artists interested. I was looking for an excuse to work in a dance related project again and now I have it. It was very cool to find this thread while I'm on vacation in Finland myself (Turku) waiting for the Red Dragon to be unleashed for my Epic.

Good luck and bring on the work!

Awesome! Thanks for the support, guys, and can't wait to see what comes in... Have a great vacation, Jose (Turku is lovely this time of year!) and Ketch, would be great to check out your flamenco piece once it's finished..! ;)

A couple of quick comments in extension of numerous e-mails and PM's that have been coming in (great to see such interest and activity!) -

- no running time limit on the films - we're happy to check out feature-length pieces as well, though obviously shorts are always easier to program in a festival...
- as for what is a "dance film" - we're certainly happy to consider dialogue-based films as well, as long as they somehow fit into the definition. :wink5: And documentaries are always welcome as well.
- our planned screening format for 4K is DCP but if you don't have one ready by the time our call for entries finishes, don't worry - you can always get in touch and we can work out the schedules. File-based screeners (ProRes, H.264 etc) are what we'd like to receive for any 4K films anyway (HD/2K entries will be sending their screeners as online videos).

Cheers,
T

We are just registering with a 4K captation of Synchronicity from Carolyn Carlson.
I shoot it with a very small team of 4 people and 4 Red (3 scarlett and 1 Epic) and with Canon lenses (we took all the equipment and went buy train, so the Red Pro Primes were to heavy). I can post some pictures if you are interested in this story.

I'm down. We are about to screen 9 of them in September. I think we shot 2 at 4k, the rest at 3k.

What now....?

Cool! If I can just ask you to browse over to http://loikka.fi/open-call-information/, read through the info, and then click onward to the application form at the bottom of the page to fill out the details on your film(s) you'll be all set. As mentioned before, 4K-screenable films need not worry about the entry fee. As we get hundreds of submissions every year, we do kindly ask that everyone fill out the form for each film they'd like to enter so we ensure we have all the info accurately in our system. Otherwise, it's easy to lose track of a film here or there... :)

Yep, thanks Olivier - received your entry form so all in order there. Looking forward to checking out the piece. Would be cool to learn more about the production, but perhaps in a separate thread so we keep this one on topic..?

Two and a half weeks left in our open call and so far looks pretty promising for the 4K screening coming together... Hope to see those pieces coming in people! :)

As a quick update - some of you have inquired about file-based screening (e.g. 4K Quicktime). To confirm, 4K DCP is the screening format that our planned venue works with. However, in the event that you don't have a DCP available or are not planning to create one yourself, we can also accept a 4K video file and have our festival's technical team create the DCP for the screening, provided that you entrust us to carry out conversion with open source tools with no express or implied warranty.

Hi all, just a quick post to revisit this topic from last autumn - Loikka festival is happening in Helsinki this week (Apr 3rd to 6th 2014) and yes - we are delighted to present what we assume is the world's first dance film festival 4K screening. We had somewhat limited screen time at our 3D/4K partner venue Orion (kudos to them for great support!) so we had to squeeze our 4K and 3D shorts into a single screening... but it's a great start and here you are - proudly presenting:

http://loikka.fi/dance-in-depth

Also included in this year's festival programme are pieces by fellow Redusers Amulio and Olivier (both of whom we look forward to seeing at the festival!).

So if any of y'all happen to be around Helsinki this coming weekend, do drop by, check out some cool films and say hello! Full programme and more info on the festival here: www.loikka.fi

And, as mentioned, this is just the start so in case you missed our call for entries this time around, the 4K thing is hopefully something we can continue in the following years as well.
