I read somewhere that there will be a new lcd with a touch screen that you can use for focusing, simply by pointing at what you want to be focused in the picture.
Now, this is indeed fantastic!

And it would be even more fantastic if it was possible to look through the viewfinder following the movement of the touch on the touchscreen. I am thinking about something like how you can follow the movement of the mouse on your PC/Mac screen/monitor.

In this way one man could be able to focus using the new touchscreen while at the same time viewing through the viewfinder.

Hope you understand my poor english. Red team might have thought of this already, but if not... I really hope this is possible to do!

All the best

I think something like this was discussed by someone from RED on this forum not too long ago, not sure if its actually something they are working on though. It would be pretty neat to have that kind of LCD -- even better if it worked with REDONE as well as the new line of DSMC's.

This explains the LCD directly below the viewfinder, and the noticeably absent follow focus (or even space for one).

makes little sense to me, how would u control the speed of ur focus pull, and if ur in handheld form factor how is ur AC going to get into where the lcd is touching where to put the focus to while camera op is up in there look at the viewfinder.

and how would it apply electronic controls to prime lenses, via cook, arri, panavision. etc. that have no electronic motors built in.

Yeah am also doubting that assessment big time. I'm sure it will have a standard mechanical follow focus. I wouldn't want to drive a car with a touch screen and I'd also prefer to not have to follow focus with one either. Basic camera menus controls with touchscreen is ok- though again with a glove on a remote/hot/wet/cold shoot I'd still prefer real buttons as an option over a touch screen.

I'd say this is just one of the possible configurations likely better suited for a run and gun rather than a standard drama shoot. Highly doubt Red would do away all together with traditional focus pulling work flow in the new cameras.

Also would like to second the menu control via buttons rather than only touch screen. Either way the camera would need the option to disable the touchscreen at a flick of a switch or combination of buttons for it be effective and not a nuisance.

Some of you continue to say that there is no space for a FF but there is plenty of, as the picture proportion shows a POV which might let you to believe this is the case, but it is not the case in deed as there is plenty of space for the FF, and surely tone of space for RC FF units on both sides of the lens.

??? Plenty of space and provision for follow focus. Sounds like FUD.

Guess I misinterpreted the render. In this configuration it just looks a bit tight in there, and there was no FF included. It was just a conjecture- of course there would be provisions for a follow focus, but I was thinking of ways that we might be given other focus options.

No FUD intended, Jim.

This little invention would certainly put talented, skilled and practiced 1rst ACs out of a job... :/

There are many applications outside of high end hollywood dramas for touchscreen focus as there are many applications within it but it is not exhaustive so i don't think you would see a major job loss rate. It would definitely be welcomed all round as an extra tool to use. I am hoping the lens lineup will have electronic focus and wireless FF similar to Birger for pulls and touch focus as a separate tool. In this case you wouldn't be using the evf at the same time so i don't see how the render answers that question. I would say quick menu access is the appropriate answer.

You do have to remember that this will probably only work with the new ff35 Red electronic glass coming out, since RPP's, Cookes, Master Primes and every other brand of cine glass is fully manual.

Another aspect is that while the ff35 glass coming from RED will be on one end of the price scale(probably some really awesome glass for some serious $$$ as pro kit always is) the Fixed 8x Scarlet will be on the very other end of the price scale - and it will also probably have autofocus, so logically the touchscreen focusing should work with it no problem.

I still think that a good focus puller will be better than a touchscreen(for focusing at least). For camera control a touchscreen is the best ever option (probably the only advantage the SI-2k cameras have right now over RED, the user interface on their cameras with the touchscreen is just beautifully solved).

.

There is a theory, based on numerous speculations and dreams from many board members, that RED will release a product which incorporates the autofocus externally as a follow focus. But it's just been idle speculation to date and nobody knows if it's even possible.

Sure it's possible, but definitely not something many shooters will consider "an essential piece of kit" since up to now something like that has only been possible in the wildest dreams for most.
