I send my drive and cable to red by fedex.

I alert and warn several times (6) fedex that the package was for repair and warranty.
They said several times that: No worries.

After repair i get a bill from fedex/Customs of 300 euros because FEDEX forgot to say to customs that the package was a repair/warranty status.

Now they dont want to be responsable for their mess!!!

FEDEX NO MORE!!!!!

Take caution!!!

Luis,

Fedex gave you the wrong advice. There is no such things as repair/service" shipping...

US and Euro laws are "all exportations are final" wheter it's resent or not as many times as you want. Basically, you ship back, Red pays custom, they ship back to you, you repay customs... That's how it is, and they did that so people don't lie and fake actual real goods exports in fraudulent "oh it's for repair", "I want to exchange it" or "It's the wrong size" sort of shipments...

There is meanwhile a service called "temporary exportation", which means something is sent temporarily, and meant to come back, within a certain timeframe, but you must file for a procedure that's complicated and they charge over 500€ for it, which is basically not worth it... Unless it's a car or something of high value...

I had to repay customs and taxes again on my LCD I had to get serviced by Red once. Red kindly paid for all the shipping, back and forth, but when it came back to me, it cost me the same taxes as new again...

That suck, I agree... Red Store in EU please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cryin:

Yep... It doesn't matter if the equipment is new, used, sent out for rental or repair, etc.. Import taxes are charged based on declared dollar amount. It sucks.

I'm surprised that the Pinewood facility in the UK isn't handling the drive and cable issues. Although, that may or may not have an impact on import fees, depending on your location.

Today i must return my camera.

$17,500 Value
If i must pay customs taxes and vat... i´m f***
Pure robbery!!!

Import duties exclusion

Import duties exclusion

Some information to add into the discussion: I recently purchased an item from an individual in Denmark that was originally manufactured in Shelton, CT..
I had called up US Customs in advance to find out what import duties would apply - after being transferred twice (due to job responsibilities moving to different offices), I was told that there was no import duty if an item was returning to the country it was made in - but the shipping documents needed to reflect that fact.
The language on actual forms varies slightly - On FedEx International Airbills, it is called "Country of Manufacture". On some postal international forms it's called "Country of Origin". This block is typically adjacent to the Commodity Description and Declared value area.
So in my case, Anton Bauer batteries shipped from Europe back to the USA had no import duties because they were returning to the "Country of Origin".

It helps when a manufacturers label affixed to the unit testifies to that fact.
Unfortunately, while the RED camera label states that it is designed, engineered and tested in Orange County, CA. USA, the label also states that it is "Made in Singapore" so this exemption may not apply.
It would be interesting to see if enough pieces of future products such as EPIC and Scarlet could be assembled here so that the nameplate can list the USA as the country of origin - could save a lot of users excess charges.

This is all about customs duties in your country- FedEx has to play by the rules...

Noah

Not totally true, at least from my experience here in Israel. Fedex is one big mess regarding to local customs, while UPS or DHL run smooth.

No more Fedex for me!!!!

I know in Canada we can ship items 'for manufacturer repair' and pay no duties or taxes, and if you happen to be charged them by mistake there is a procedure for filing a refund.

If Fedex charges you brokerage and fees on something that was clearly marked as not needing it, I would hope a simple phone call would fix that. Fedex has always been great for me and quickly fixes their mistakes.

Ido Karilla is right.
FedEx is a mess, though not sure UPS and DHL are much better.
However, I found a way to almost eliminate custom fees. When I send something for repair I make sure to make a temporary exporting certificate signed by custom. FedEx don't like to do that but I make them.
I am sure it works that way in most countries. It simple can't be that one has to pay so much for repair, (that will make the Red One very expensive, won't it as we have batteries plates, chargers coming and going for repair and cameras going for upgrade every Monday and Friday).

Import duties

Import duties

In the UK the camera is 0% duty as it is classed by Red correctly as a "digital video still camera" - not sure if this classification is Europe wide but on our whole package the only thing we paid duty on was the base kit as that was classed as articles of aluminium - everything else gets lumped in with the camera classification. You need to research your own country's import/taric code for the equipment and make sure that when it is sent/returned you have this info to hand. Fedex had the incorrect classification on my import but quickly fixed it when I pointed out the correct taric code.

You still have to pay VAT (local tax) but I imagine anyone using Red would be able to claim this back - you certainly can in the UK.

This is not true. Just email the bomb squad, they have a very elaborate logistics department which will help you with your customs problem.

We shipped a LCD to RED in the states that way from Europe and we didn't have to pay customs at all since we've filled out the right forms.

You can do it. its called a controlled export. It works fine but takes 24 hours longer (in the UK at least) Fedex have paperwork for it.

Dave

Maybe FEDEX works better in some countries but...
The PORTUGUESE FEDEX refuses to make Temporary exports.
And also refuses to put on a email or paper that they dont make Temporary exports.
Totally a joke!
Avoid all costs.

Fedex screwed up for few times as well here, they're jokers

Important note:

VAT is not customs
VAT usually has to be paid, regardless if its an import or repair return.
But VAT can always be deducted for business users. For private users this could become complicated.

Customs are usually not refundable. With a "carnet" you can declare goods for temporal export, this could be for a repair or just for a shooting travel - they (customs) don't care about "why", they just take not "that" it happens.

With the right declaration you can ship without additional costs back and forth, BUT the carnet is quite a piece of paperwork and the preprinted form sheets cost some money. Once you have done it you can keep a copy for future, then it should be easy when it happens next time.

Indeed this is complicated, but we have to deal with it.

Fedex/DHL/UPS usually work ok in this regard. Clearly human error can happen.
USPS is a horror compared to the above, because they do not even care to send out packages that do not include papers at all. I ended up a couple of times having to pick up goods at customs office when being shipped via USPS (ebay stuff) and no papers were included. Never had this with Fedex, DHL or UPS.

Cheers,
Axel

Hi Axel

3 Times on portuguese FEDEX... 3 times burned!
Not a pain lover.

The local FedEx here told me when shipping to US I have to equip the products with a Proforma Invoice in which the value of all items are clearly stated. The camera, XLR-miniXLR cables, battery plates etc. were upgraded in California. FedEx brought everything back and the values Red listed were compared to the Proforma Invoice I had made. As a result did not have to pay any tax or VAT.

I have had issues with all FedEx, UPS, and DHL, but usually FedEx works best from Sweden. BUT a big no-no is the normal Post office (Posten) here. They are expert on making things backward. FedEx just build a large new place at Stockholm airport (Arlanda) and the persons there are very good and helpful with paperwork.

Bloody Fedex screwed up last year when importing my camera; I told them the import duty was far above what I expected to be paying (£5,000 duty only- plus VAT). The guy at the end of the phone said if I overpaid I could easily claim it back. Around 20 phone calls, twice as many emails and days of stress I eventually had to make a claim direct to HMCE which took 6 months; they found in my favour and refunded me around £3,000. But still what a pain in the ass!

Fedex had lumped every thing into some random import code, even though at the time I had told them to recheck the taric codes etc.

I'm pretty easy going but trying to talk to those idiots at Fedex nearly sent me insane; a big enormous company where no one know's anything about what they should be doing!

Oh and I forgot to mention the time a few years ago when my lost one of the packages for my wireless FF and spent 3 weeks denying it, oh and then it popped up, opened.

Can't stand Fedex!
