  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Features NOT enabled...

We have said for months that all features would NOT be enabled for the 1st cameras going out the door.

I would give you a complete list, but we continue to enable features as we prepare for this coming Friday.

We expect that all features will be done by early October. That means that if you get a camera before that date, you will receive a "present" every week that enables features as they become available.

You would open your email (or download from our website) a file that you transfer to a Compact Flash card. Insert the card and boot the camera. You will be asked if you want to "Upgrade your Firmware". You click "Yes". A minute later, you'll get a message that the update is complete. Reboot. Done.

We have spoken to all reservation holders for the 1st 25 cameras and they understand this. But your number may be coming up soon after so you should know.

You do have the option to wait until all features are enabled to take delivery at no consequence to you (if you have that much patience). We will hold your camera (same serial number) and ship when feature set is complete. So far, none of the 25 has chosen that option. But you can.

We won't know exactly how many features will be in or out of the 1st 25 until Thursday night. We will be testing and deciding until the last minute. Since things change everyday, what we say today will not mean much. I'm sure you will all hear about what is "in" and what is "coming" by Friday night.

Thanks for the update! Congratulations on making this a reality. We expect that a lot of the missing pieces of the puzzle will be revealed next friday so we won't ask anything else until then.

That «thursday night» part was/has been quite amusing indeed... :)
 
Sounds good to me. The obvious caveat is that you would need the compact flash adapter to do this, which I'm sure most will buy (I definitely will) - but you can't assume that everyone will be going with this option. Is there a way to update via USB if that feature is not installed?
 
As long as 4k @ 24fps and 1080p dual HD-SDI out and TC out is available, I shall be a happy man.

We cannot imagine anyone not buying the CF module... but you'll have several ways to upload firmware besides CF.

I would want to go with the 1,8" flash option as my camera is delivered in feb08 and I expect the 1,8" flash to be at least 32GB at that time and 64GB sometime soon thereafter
Is that a naive assumption and why are "most" people having the smaller CF
option installed?
Have I missed something(other than what people usually miss;-)
I will be using my RED for high end work i.e. commercials and features.

The 1.8" flash is certainly a good sounding alternative... but nothing has been produced yet that is fast enough. We can only assume at this point in time that this format will be a viable alternative. CF is known, it works, it is available, and CF development is certain.

Can't you get CF plug-in adapters for people to use other means of data out of the same Red Flash module?

Ok I get the message. I´ll wait until jan08 to decide.
Maybe my camerabody will be made
out of a carbonated Einsteinium alloy, and my lenses made out of diamond.
Maybe I will never shoot 35mm again...

I'm not buying the CF module since I won't be able to use it with the RAW port installed. I thought the RED-RAM was your favorite storage medium anyway. Now I feel like I'm missing out.... :bye2:

CF is the way to go.
All major DSLRs from Canon, Nikon, Leica, Sony, Fuji, Sigma etc...
are using CF cards. Also VIPER'S Grass Valley™ Venom FlashPak
a card module is based on CF. Arri D20 is using that dock-able module too.
So again to repeat: that's the way to go.

CF card module.

Thank you for posting this. I love the constant openness and professionalism coming from you and the RED team.

October is far sooner than I would have guessed. I can imagine too that the camera will only get better and better.
