Hi all,

My friend & colleague is looking at shooting an indie feature sometime early next year. Now with the new Red One pricing, and my ownership of a Scarlet, he is looking at shooting the film as a 2 camera setup. Regardless of the pending Dragon for Scarlet, he wants to shoot both cameras on MX.

From what I've read on the forums, a 4k finish should look the same with output from both cameras and cut seamlessly together. What is required to lock the time-codes, and edit the film together being able to switch between both cameras with ease? i.e cable, matching camera settings, editing program? I've never done this, and it'd be great to get a few pointers and hear from anyone who's worked with similar shoots.

Additional to this, would it be better off investing in Red Drives for the R1 or SSD's?

Edit: + What is the cheapest way to power a R1 with V-Mounts?

Most of this comes down to cost. It's now cheaper to buy a Red One than rent one for a month, so that looks like the path he'll take. Though if anyone has done this before and knows if it's too much of a headache to coordinate/match/edit the two camera's, I'd be very thankful.

All input welcomed.

Josef

Both have timecode inputs, so the best thing to do is get sound to give you two lockit boxes to keep the timecode the same.

Then match the settings in camera (ISO, Kelvin, aperture, etc Even though most of these are metadata).

I would strongly suggest SSDs. I have never been a big fan of the drives and have in fact had problems with them (it is possible that I had a bum drive, but it was a very scary experience).

Another thing to think about is, when shooting with two cameras, you should have two camera teams (1st and 2nd) and for sure a full time downloader to handle two reds' data.
