The other day I put a S16 Canon 8-64 on the RED.

On 2K no vignetting as expected, on 3K clear visible portholing.

To mentain FOV of a S16 lens 2K is too much windowed and 3K has too much avtive sensor. Something in between seems to be just right, perhaps 2.5K.

Now, if we had seamless windowing one could window the sensor just about the right amount to make a given S16 lens fit perfectly.

How about that? Would it be possible? I'm by no means a engeneer, just found that 2K is way smaller than S16 and using S16 zooms seems to be the way to go for documentaries and the likes.

(I know one could crop in RC but it would be much more convenient and to do this in camera)

Regards,

Hans

So setting the resolution would be a variable like ASA rating or f-stop...? That is definitely out-of-the box thinking. I have a feeling that this might require a fair amount of work at several points in the production pipeline, though.

S16 1.85:1 would end up being 2178 x1311.

Thanks Deanan. Does this mean it is impossible to implement a S16 mode with these odd numbers? Or would it negatively affect picture quality when downsizing to 2K?

Georg

Down sizing to 2k with an odd scale softens things a bit (to varying degrees depending on the algorithm) which can easily negate the benefits of the extra 130 pixels. It also makes things more complicated for the QT proxy resolutions with very strange sizes.

What you may want to do is shoot 3k and crop/scale depending on the set of lenses you will use. Longer lenses will cover more than wides.
