At the moment Red detects dropped frames and flags them temporarily on the displays. But as soon as the camera rolls again, that information is lost. Some DPs, operators, etc don't even notice it! So the DIT never gets told, and that dodgy clip never gets flagged up without a realtime viewing.
Red also detects sata errors, codec errors etc, but again that information is not easily flagged for editors, operators, ACs, DITs, etc. We can write a camera log, if we remember in the heat of a rushed shoot before the gear goes back to the rental house and gets reused. But how do we read that log? It's encoded, so really only useful for Red to examine.
What I'd love is that if there are dropped frames, sata errors, etc that some sort of relevant flag be set in the metadata that shows a clear indication in RedCine-X, Storm etc, that there was a problem and the nature of the problem.
And finally a simple additional step (which can be disabled/enabled in the menus) when unmounting media from the camera to write a simple text readable log with a list of clip names, maybe timecode, and errors flagged? It won't catch every error, but it would definitely be useful!
[Edit] Actually - it could be automatic - it only writes a simple log if there were detected errors/dropped frames. No problems, no log written. Making it an option makes it less useful (if it wasn't selected) and another step when you just want to unmount the media and get fresh media on.
