What do you think?

Sometime before NAB, I am guessing Apple will release FCS 3 while Red releases the Scarlet.

The reason?....

Apple did not participate in NAB '08

FCS 3 could have the codec that Red Ray has, and would be included to make Red Ray DVD through DVDSP 5!!!

Apple would have a nice and slick video on apple.com/finalcutpro/scarlet just as Apple did for the Red ONE.

Ted would talk about the new AFFORDABLE revolution for ordinary people and how you can work with the Scarlet's R3D files seamlessly through the edit(FCP7), color correction(Color 2), and the delivery(Red Ray through DVDSP 5).

So, what do you think?

Much as I would love to agree- sadly outside of this forum the world does not revolve around RED.

I know, but they have RedCode for FCS 2 and a video of Red Digital Cinema on their website, do they not???

AND, if their Red Ray is as good as it sounds, why wouldn't Apple want it included with FCS 3?

Not saying there isn't and won't continue to be cooperation between RED and Apple, just that Apple's software releases are not always likely to revolve around RED as they have many other 3rd party vendors to work with as well.

FCS3 being released then would make sense especially sense Apple didn't release the replacement for Shake this year like it was supposed to, if I remember correctly. Would certainly make for a nice double whammy for NAB. Full RED support is a must of course, maybe that's the cause of the delay? ;)

why do people always think that there will be FCS update every year or two. I can agree about Apple releasing shake replacement, but FCS3? No way. Maybe a minor updates will happen, but not a overhaul of studio package.

I really hope you're wrong....

10-bit RGB rendering in FCP
Very buggy 25fps file based Color
Gamma-hell

Rendering engines and format consistency throughout comes to mind when I set up my 10 reasons to hate FCS for RED.

There are good thing, too. Most are offline related.

Not to be pedantic, but Apple wasn't "supposed to" release the successor to Shake this year. They made no announcements about the future of the product other than a short line in their EOL press release that "no further software updates are planned as we begin work on the next generation of Shake compositing software." The whole idea of "Phenomenon" and a 2008 delivery date was based on an (typically) flimsy rumor posted on MacRumors and later picked up by AppleInsider.

I totally want to be wrong and eat my words about this, but I wouldn't hold your breath for a Shake successor any time soon. A great deal of the people who worked on Shake (including one of its original creators, Ron Brinkmann, who resigned from Apple last year to work on the Foundry's Nuke product) are either no longer with Apple, or are working in other divisions of the company, such as the iLife division.

If Apple is truly intending to release a Shake successor, then they will have a much larger uphill climb to make than they did when they originally killed Shake. Nuke and Fusion are quickly gaining traction as the high-end, desktop compositing software packages of choice. To be sure, Shake is still being used in most VFX houses now (I still use it, and prefer it over Nuke, if only because I've spent so much time working with Shake), but I can't imagine that the tiny niche that Shake served contributed to Apple's bottom line at all. In fact, Ron Brinkmann posted on Twitter, admitting that "nobody in upper-level Apple management was ever willing to 'credit' proapps for HW sales when allocating hiring resources"

As I said, I want to be proven wrong on this. But Apple is a much different company than it was when it acquired Shake from Nothing Real (or even Final Cut from Macromedia). They don't need the halo effect of coolness that Shake once gave them anymore. That's the job of iPods, iPhones and Macbooks now.

the shake-sucessor isn`t coming, I fear - the compositing market is way too small for another new "mac-only" application. just take a look at autodesk`s "next generation" app "toxik" - its virtually crawling forward since it`s release a couple of years ago.

and like melorama said, I`ve also heard they`ve moved the shake team to aperture and other departments. From my side I`m quite happy with after effects and Fusion.

Perhaps apple could release 'Phenomenon' and bundle it with FCS 3.:cold: Now thats what i call a final cut studio overhaul.
