I have the latest FCPX and the latest OS. I use the BlackMagic Ultra Studio Mini Monitor via Thunderbolt to SDI to go from my MacPro to my Flanders Scientific AM210. Recently, we began shooting in 2:1 and sometimes in 2.39. Nothing I do gets the right aspect ratio onto my Monitor. That is unless I am shooting 16x9. Anybody know how to fix this? For reference, DaVinci Resolve has no problem sending the right signal to my monitor in the exact same setup. Whatever DaVinci puts out, my monitor shows correctly. This is on Beta 15 btw....

Edit: This is now on Release 15.1.2.008

Bump....on this thing....any ideas? Anyone?

Shoot an aspect ratio chart that lines up with the viewfinder reticle. This will give your post department the information they need on how to resize and/or crop the image to work for editing and final color.

It's problematic to change aspect ratios during production, but the final sizing is essentially a creative choice, so it's whatever the director and/or DP want it to be. Famously, David Fincher generally shoots a large 6K frame these days and then crops to 4K, so the final decisions on framing are all made in post. They also shoot charts.

I could tell you how to handle the workflow in Resolve, but I'm not sure how best to approach this for FCPX. Are you using anamorphic lenses or just shooting flat? How are you composing the shots in the viewfinder?

"Just to let you know another test I did : direct HDMI to the monitor from the computer or via a usb C to HDMI selected as AV output works perfectly with a custom 2:39 project. I know this is very questionable for colour grading but for easy monitoring or client viewing the cut it is functional then switch HDMI input on monitor and to BMD box when grading with Davinci ..."

Looks like a USB-C to HDMI adapter will work. Perhaps like this:
