  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCPX 10.1.2 Thoughts

We have a winner. FCP-X Finally crash after 18 days of moderate use. One single crash and even then, I was able to reopen and see the effect "Cartoon" that I applied still took hold.

Haha, challenge accepted Will. I have a certain love for complexity and pushing the software outside what they normally do which often leads to dubious stability! ;)

I really love the new Final Cut, very efficient, love the new audio filters.

David,

Would you mind explaining your proxy work flow from import, edit to export ? Does this approach take up significant disk space?

I find the proxies so easy.

You can do everything you want with complete freedom and not bog down the system. For dragon it's a 6k proxy sequence, so even if you squish the proxies down to 1080 for client rough cuts it looks great. Then you have two choices to do a final render. Export an XML and open it resolve and grade it and stabilize it there or leave it in fcp, change one setting and you are reading directly from the r3d for a final export.

i find the stabilizing is quite good, but I don't use it that much. One thing I did notice is that there are more settings in the kind of stabilization you want. Remember this is the optical stabilization for Shake, so it's renders a fantastic quality. Some shots can get a bit wonky, but in adjusting the settings I have been able to get them back in line. It depends what is moving in the frame. Sometimes the blade tool is your friend when stabilizing. :)

Does anyone know if, by applying RED's latest Apple Workflow Installer, does it update to the newest SDK or use OpenCL/CUDA for r3ds? My retina has the slightest trouble playing back at low compression ratios (<6:1 at 4k+) at "performance quality", and I know having GPU support would give it the extra 10-20% playback speed it needs for buttery smoothness.

It used to crash on me a lot back around 10.1 and before, but now its pretty solid. But it loads up so quick and it autosaves everything so it wasn't really a big deal

Unfortunately, no. Apple has to implement the RED SDK into FCP X. I was very much hoping they would have done that with June's 10.1.2, but alas no. Which probably means we won't see it until another feature update later this year.

back up all media to raid 5 drives then LTO tape. Drive only hold r3ds
then create library on a different raid 5
set the one light looks in rcx
import the r3ds into fcp x with create proxy media set to on
let it render the media
set fcp to proxy playback
edit
export final sequence XML to resolve
color
export audio using x2pro for logics mix

reimport and marry in fcpx (usually a 4444 render)

do outputs from fcp x

the proxies take up very little space compared to r3ds and are less taxing on the whole system. Proxy media is about 1/6th the size of r3d media. The final renders are usually much larger.

cheers,

10.1.3 out today. Not at the shop. Anyone know if it updates to the latest Red SDK?

They don't mention it in the release notes. And this is just a maintenance update- so almost certainly not. I think we'll have to wait for a post-Yosemite update somewhere between late-October and the end of the year.
