  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

fcp3....according to AppleInsider

I can't imagine what Apple has in mind for Final Cut 7, it's already perfect.

Now I see Premiere Pro and Vegas running resolution independent and on the fly metadata adjustment, FCP is far from perfect.

An absolute deluge of sarcasm! Really I'm very much looking forward to FC7, I hope it includes better RED and RGB support. I have high hopes for Color as well.

As long as they fix the multi-cam bug I'll be happy...

We're about to do 2 large multicam projects and haven't used it in a year or so. What is the bug you speak of? Does it work?

Autosync would be nice, making dailies in Avid is quite a bit faster because of this feature...

Didn't mean to scare you with multicam. It works great and I use it every day. As long as you use the footage you want to master, you will be fine.

The bug is related to SEND TO COLOR or creating an EDL. It only takes the first couple of cameras and throws the rest away.

Very frustrating as I want to edit with ProRes, but then grade in Color referencing the original R3Ds clip by clip.

I can easily replace the ProRes with the proxies, but you still can't SEND TO COLOR or create a proper EDL/XML for grading.

Basically I have to master the ProRes. Works fine and I get AMAZING results that no one would look at and say has been compromised. I just know there is EVEN MORE quality buried in there that I don't have access to.

I shoot 7 REDs at a time running a single 90 minute take on each camera. I then have to choose a single color correction for each camera and then tweak the ProRes in FCP.

If anyone knows a way around this, I would LOVE to know.

Cheers,

Jim

PS I did an interview for the Red Centre podcast last week if you want to hear more about the process I use.

I still use FCS1/FCP5.1 and haven't had any problems with Multicam. Is it a problem that began in FCS2/FCP6?

Multicam reality shows cut on Avids use multigrouping, which is centered around assistant edit droids creating 3-4 hour timelines wherein the clips are assigned auxiliary tc based on the first clip in the sequence, adding edit points through every track at the head of the individual clips, and subclipping those and creating multigroups which the editors use to cut the show in multicam mode. Can't do this in FCP because of the problems noted in this thread:

Note that the thread is from 2007 (FCP 5) and no, it wasn't fixed in FCP 6 either.

Hahaha, sorry Steve.

True RGB handling, gamma issue and DPX support please.

Hey Joe, thanks for the post.

Not quite following here. Is this limiting because you can't re-assign meta data TC within FCP?

I just use in-point sync and everything lines up, even without jam synced timecode. Takes a few minutes to get all cameras lined up for up to 16 cameras.

More audio editing options without sending to soundtrack would be nice, and better grading without sending to colour. Plus I'd like it to work basically like Avid. FC is somehow more user friendly to set up, but fiddley to edit on.
