  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCP-X and GPU render

Hi Everyone,

Is there a way to switch off GPU render of RED footage in FCP-X?

I'm on Yosemite 10.10.4, RED Cine 35, recent Apple RED plugin, FCP-X 10.2.2. Old Style MacPro, 2 x 2.93 GHz 6-core Xeons, 48 GB, Radeon HD 5870.

I ask because bizarrely the introduction of render on the GPU has dramatically slowed down my Mac. Not so much for the export itself, but in the sense that everything else becomes essentially unusable while the render is going. Although the cores are hardly stressed (previously all 12 cores would get used at close to 90% by a render and now they bump along at 10% at most) the UI becomes unresponsive. Even trying this post is like working on an old teletype machine. I'm assuming it is because the GPU is working at full lick, and probably running out of GPU memory to boot, so that there's nothing left for running the desktop and other applications, even simple ones like Mail or Safari.

It is not the end of the world. I have a laptop and can go work on it instead. But I'd like to turn the GPU renders off and compare speeds for interest's sake. I've got a GTX980 on order which I hope may help. It seems silly to have all those cores sitting there doing absolutely no good at all.

Ideally my optimum speed may be RED debayer on the CPU and effects (eg Magic Bullet) on the GPU. But I don't know if that is even possible to do. Anyone know?

Cheers, Hywel

The 980 should speed things along nicely. I have a 980 ti in a similar (2.66) 12-core) and it's smooth as can be, probably more than the 5870 can handle. Not sure about turning GPU off though. It's very easy to do in premiere but FCP is no doubt going to be its own beast!

BTW, I'm also running a GTX980 - mine is a GeForce w/4GB VRAM, rather than the 6GB Ti - in a very similar cMP tower with great results.

Blair (or anyone?) - does the 980 give a noticeable performance boost over the GYX 680?

EDIT: typo (of course) - GTX

Not sure about vs the 680, but my 980 ti was a massive bump over my 570 2.5gb. The 570 rates a 7.2 vs an 8 for the 680 on gpu boss. In resolve from 6K with full quality debayer, the fps went from 3-5fps to 23.98 for high-node count clips with windows, blurs and layers. I suspect the GPU might go faster if I had a faster RAID.

Any feedback on the Titan X? Looks like the only one with much availability from MacVidCards. Does it put my MacPro 5,1 back in the game?

Pretty sure you can toggle off background rendering. Of course since it's FCP-X, I have no idea where that toggle is... Search help perhaps...

It's in the preferences, which are very few in comparison to a lot of other NLEs

It isn't background rendering- it is rendering during export. I used to be able to set the machine to export to a ProRes master and do other useful stuff (emails, etc.) but now the entire machine slows to a crawl despite the CPU usage being minimal. So I wondered if there was a way to go back to CPU deBayer instead of GPU deBayer.

The GTX980 is a good fit for the cMP towers due to excellent performance at a moderate TDP. I have been able to run the 4GB GeForce version in slot #1, RR-X in #2, without an auxiliary PSU or supplemental cooling. It should be significantly faster than the 680 on many tasks as it's based on the much newer Maxwell architecture. The TitanX w/12GB would have more raw horsepower, but due to bus speeds, system RAM clock rates, etc anything past the GTX980 is certainly diminishing returns and you'd have to address power/heat issues effectively (aux. PSU, cooler) to realize anything close to full potential.

A combination of the 980 and installing bigger internal hard drives (bigger= more free space = faster, even through spin speeds/data rates nominally the same) seem to have helped. Still get a bit of the slowdown but not the crippling issue I had before the updates. Hooray!

Cheers, Hywel
