  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCP to AE to Color. Where all the experts?

That sounds really strange...
all over the place?
So not just the in and out points wrong?
If thats the case try to check the Footage and Project settings.
right mouse click on the footage in the project window
I think its: Interpret Footage - Main.
does it have the right Frames per second.
Otherwise there seems to be some bug.
Only way to get going would be to relink your correct imorted Mov. Cut to the R3Ds manually, by right mouse clicking - replace Footage and then chose the R3D with the same name. For a Music Video thats not that much of work.

And your doing your conforming in FC right?
Than export XML via autoatic duck.

Once I have the edit complete I use the AD xml export not sure about conform Frank does that need to be done in FCP if so how

Cut with proxies, relink with Clipfinder export via Automatic duck to After Effects.
But thats what you knew allready. I really would like to help, if I can, but I think I can't really get a picture of your problem. I thought after relinking and exporting your cut is messed up. Now I'm confused.
What workflow didn't work for you

loaded the proxies from the raid drive H size
Placed proxies on the timeline and edit. No effects straight cuts
Export XML with AD
Import into AE with AD with the R3D button on for the red files instead of .mov
double click the comp and thats it.

I think I will start fresh tomorrow with a new project in FCP and do the edit again it's not many cuts

Paul

Okay... now I get you.
Never did this workflow.
Try to conform in your proxies in FC using Clipfinder, then send XML via AD.
That should definetly work.
Otherwise, as I said, do it manually in AE
I think theres no need to start fresh, if the straight export without the R3D button on in AD works
Try one of the ways I stated

loaded the proxies from the raid drive H size
Placed proxies on the timeline and edit.
Paul

I think this may be your problem with AD. The workflow is based on using Log and Transfer to convert R3D files into a proxy edit format in FCP. Not using the QT reference files generated in-camera. AD reads the dark metadata created by Log and Transfer to determine where media files come from and timecode points.

The Clipfinder method I described worked using camera proxies, not L&T. I am running an older version of Automatic Duck which does not have the R3D option.

I used FCP's built in XML export, not the AD one. Then I used Clipfinder's "Run conform on FCP XML file" tool, with the "replace clips with R3D (Adobe only)" and "use only first 9 or 16 characters of file name in input XML" options checked. Then I used AD to import the resulting XML into After Effects. Worked perfectly.

Hi Nick
Restarted a new project this morning. the result is exactly the same.
I am going to try your recommend workflow now.

YES YES it worked, thanks a lot Nick that's a big help to me. The only thing I think was wrong is the Log & Transfer to get the proxies

I spoke with auto duck about two weeks ago.I asked them about AE reconnecting to the R3D files they said it does not do this. He said that once my proxie edit was in AE that i needed to Option replace all of the files. It worked for me but very time consuming.Just make sure you use the camera created proxies.

I just read that you got it so congrats. But hopefully this info will help someone

That's interesting, that is why I bought it! I am sure that's what the info says, and it gives the option to connect to R3D files on the option screen.
You were lucky to contact them as I have been unable to contact them in any way or form. It really sucks when you are left out on your own after buying the software.

So I am interested to know, which the reconnect to .R3D option work if the clips were captured through Log & Transfer?

Major bummer if that is the only way AD 5.0 works at reconnecting .R3D.

What version are you using? This was an advertised feature for 5.0.

Version 5. Yes a real bummer! If I could contact them would be useful

I think there is a misunderstanding in terminology. The H, M, P files created by the camera, RedAlert, etc. are NOT "proxy" files. These are QT reference files linked to the R3D files. When you drag and drop these into FCP and edit with them, a lot of metadata is handled differently. Using these to edit with has actually been discouraged from the beginning by Apple.

When you use FCP Log & Transfer to formally import from the actual R3D file, then a proper proxy file is created at your selected format and resolution. This can be a full quality 2K ProResHQ or 444 file if you like. It can also be a rewrapped REDCODE file.

Automatic Duck ProImportAE5.0 (version 5) will replace this edit proxy media with the R3D files on the way into After Effects CS5. In my testing, it worked as advertised and was frame accurate.

Red has also discouraged editing with these reference files, which are widely referred to as proxy files. However it works brilliantly and it's a widely used practice.

Specifically what metadata, pertinent to EDL/XML information, is handled differently from camera/Redcine wrappers vs. L&T created wrappers? The pertinent information would be Time Code and Reel ID, right? If AutoDuck can move "camera proxies" to AE successfully and then you are able to relink the proxy files to the .R3D manually, why can't it do the same but relink on import?

Plenty of programs do this process successfully, with camera/RCX generated wrappers as offline media.

As far as the "Reference" files and metadata issues are concerned, it has'nt given me a issue. But i also only do tv spots and short videos.
Autoduck works On CS5 but i have CS4 so therefore it did not work. But the option replace method worked.

FCP retains a lot of dark metadata when you use L&T that isn't immediately exposed until you tear deep into the XML files. For instance, how it tracks media file locations versus the master clips in the FCP browser. This is how it's possible to later batch capture offline P2 and XDCAM clips when you've L&T'ed them. It's based on what the L&T plug-in supports. So in the P2 example, there's a lot of camera data that also comes across into the FCP project.

I don't know the specific differences in RED files, but I'm simply saying that L&T is a fundamentally different process than dragging files from a folder on your hard drive into the FCP browser.

I'm sorry for the slow reply, I was on vacation Thursday and Friday helping at a 6-8 grade leadership camp up in the mountains quite far away from civilization. There is no phone service there and their internet (presumably satellite) was wicked slow so I was not able to check my Automatic Duck email until I returned.

I cannot explain why you were unable to use the support form, others successfully enter the validation word "sunny" just about every day. And some even while I was away last week.

I don't know which number you dialed, so I cannot explain the error message you received. My office number is 360-568-6805 x21 and the phone number on our contact page is a Google Voice voicemail number that since I was on vacation I was unable to monitor.

Because I was on vacation I was not logged in to Instant Messenger.

And thanks for mentioning that you got my email address online, that helped me find the thread on Reduser, I am glad Oliver Peters was able to get you the correct answer.
