So, if AE truly support 4k RAW from the ground up, what I'd like to do is continue editing in FCP using low res proxy files, export EDL to Crimson, then from Crimson to AE?

If AE can use the original R3D, will Crimson be necessary for this pipeline?

I'm planning to do all of my low-budget personal color work with Colorista & AE7. Using FCP for offline cutting and final output.

You will still need to match proxies back to raw.
Don'tchu worry.
I've been thinking alot about it ;)

Sounds interesting, Ian! Talk to Joofa - maybe you can use some of his AE EDL import script so you don't reinvent the wheel on that component of your project?

I own Automatic Duck and used it for the Ringo video.

Automatic Duck currently does not do the "find the original .R3D files" trick. It just creates and After Effects project that points to the Avid OMF media or Quicktime proxies.

Ian or Joofa could definitely make a better tool.

Oh, and if they could add a conform facility (eg where you can update your AE project based on a changelist, OR send your renders back into an Avid or FCP timeline as individual clips with handles a la Color <-> FCP) then you'd have something REALLY cool.

Problem with Automatic Duck and the After Effects Premiere Import options are that if you change your edit after you've moved everything into After Effects, you are screwed. You end up matching frames by eye. It sucks.

I think this trick should be possible to do with some AE script magic. Maybe we need to send some scouts from reduser to the ae scripters forums, searching for wizards who can pull this off. It shouldn't be difficult, once you have your project in AE (from Premiere, or FCP/Automatic Duck or whatever), to ask for the file paths then automatically replace quicktime or prores proxies to online r3d's, and resize footage/comps as necessary.

But first let's see how the r3d support works.
