  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello all, doing some tests with Iblooms very handy Redtrip script. So far so good with a few glitches and wondering if anyone with know how has any input. Forgive my lack of knowledge on many things. Higher end things are rather new to me, but it is rather exciting to be playing with such high resolution and latitude on such a relatively cheap computer. Okay. First let me explain what we did. We shot some footage (mostly if not all 2k), then we edited the quicktime proxies in FCP in an SD sequence scaling down the 1k proxy (ie. letterboxed). The end edit was about 1 min and a half with 32 edits. Exported XML to FCP then used Ian's script and made a working Redcine XML. Everything imported just fine (one weird thing though that I can't figure out, is that Redcine was playing things back 2x or faster. Couldn't find a setting that I might have accidentally pushed to make it do that. Anyone?). Since we were going to go directly to Color I didn't do any color correction in Redcine, but just exported DPX sequences of the pulled footage. Took about 7 min for 1 min 1/2 of 2k > 1080 dpx's for anyone interested. Now here is where there are things that I don't quite understand.

One. I tried saving the Redcine XML (as Ibloom's script requests to be able to take things back into FCP) but it said "Failed to save Redcine file" or something like that. So, I wasn't able to save the Redcine project file. And thus, I've only been able to test 50% of Ibloom's redtrip. What I have tested has yielded very exceptional results. Here is my thought on why Redcine won't let me save the project. Possibly because I have DPX in my output window and it doesn't like that? Haven't troubleshooted it too much yet. Kind of odd if you ask me. Also, don't know exactly how I'm going to reconnect the DPX exports to the XML that redcine exports, or I might just be going about this the wrong way. There's always the manual way of reconnecting footage but that would get real tedious. Anyway.

Two. Color sees the DPX's and imports just fine, but the color isn't anything representative of what I exported. We can tweak the color and get it looking "normal" or how we exported it, but it seems like it should import correctly. The interesting thing is that any adobe product sees the dpx sequences just fine (AE, Ps, Pr). AJA DPXtoQTTranslator sees it just fine. Here are two grabs of the same frame to give you an idea. Initial thoughts is that Color is messing it up since it is seen how I export it in various other programs (color space issue?). Anyway, thoughts, comments, critiques always welcome.

*DISCLAIMER* These images are to show you what is happening in the transition from Redcine to Color. Not for any resolution or quality analysis. The original images look fantastic, especially in slow-mo.

I do have to say though, all of us here are highly impressed at the image quality, and the latitude that is present. Very impressive. Cheers to the Red Team for sure!

I saw the same thing happen when I imported DPX files into Color. I'm sure someone could tell you what's going on, but a fix I've found is to check the "Override Header Settings" box in the "Settings 2" tab on the right of the timeline.

Setting it to linear seems to correct it. Color seems to show it in the "film" (log) mode by default. (Though I don't know if "linear" is the correct setting to be importing/viewing the footage at)

Someone more familiar with Color and DPX log/linear formats would probably give you a better answer on what's going on and what setting to have it at.

I think you may find the dpx route an eaier if you choose to work in/export log from RC...

(Haven't bothered myself yet)
This looks like a log/lin filter applied to a lin image.

On a different note:
After exporting from RC, how did you open in Color?

Gunleik

Thanks for the tips. I'll check the color space issue on Monday. As far as importing, if you set your settings correct (ie, something that Color likes to see and supports resolution wise) then you just navigate to where your dpx image sequence is, and it actually recognizes it as such and shows it as a clip. Pretty cool if you ask me. Didn't import it via XML or edl. Still trying to figure out how to do that after I've exported a dpx sequence vs. actual files.

(auto)Color!!!! :w00t: :)

DPX log/linear out of REDCINE?

How do you switch between log and linear DPX in REDCINE? I don't see that option anywhere.
