Anybody seen this before - just installed on my new MacPro, kept virtually all my system settings identical to my old MacBook Pro but did a clean install of FCP. These are 2K pro res files - everything will be going normal and then suddenly everything will show up like this - it won't go away until I restart my comp.

I've experienced similiar oddities and almost always put them down to heat related GPU issues. Do you have SMC fan control installed on your Macbook Pro - it's pretty much a must (my issues have been with iMacs - but same principle, graphics gets too hot, funky stuff starts to happen, can only be fixed by a reset.)

The fact that it goes away with a reset is what pretty much gives it away as a likely heat issue.

Corrupt FCP preference files are not always, but often the reason for bizarre FCP behavior. Trashing the prefs is always one of the steps when I'm stumped. Often works.

Could this be a Quicktime version thing? Also Red version.

Quicktime is the newest version - and this footage isn't RED footage - it's ProRes. I'll try testing with a project in a different codec when I have a chance. There's talk over that the LAFCPUG forum that this is indicative of a graphics card failure - but I have a hard time believing that a hardware failure would isolate itself to one program - I have experienced no problems with video in other programs.

Another thing which could be a factor is that you mention you have recently gone from a MacBook Pro to a Mac Pro. I am assuming you had no problems until the change?

I know you did a FCP install from scratch on the new machine, but did you clone across all the rest of your settings and apps from the old machine to the new one? Because unless you clean install everything (including the OS) then there can be all sorts of unexpected issues.

This is a MacPro tower now that's having the issue... I don't imagine heat has anything to do with it.

1. Are there Red Quicktime Proxy files included in the project?
2. What video card do you have?

If the answer to 2 is the Nvidia 7300 GT and the answer to 1 is yes, the video card is your problem. Swap it out for either a better Nvidia model or an ATI and the problem will go away.

Are these 2K ProRes files? I bet that they are.

I believe this is caused by 2K files on some of the older or less powerful graphics cards in the Mac Pros. Probably more of the early cards. I've had this same problem and it always occurs on 2K ProRes. This has been discussed before in the forums and that has been the consensus. Solution, transcode to 1080 ProRes
