Hi,

I'm new to red. I've just shot a short film and I've come to edit. I've downloaded the redcode quicktime widget into fcp. i import the _p proxies and then put them on the timeline and then fcp crashes every time.

i get an error message saying its probably because of the redcode quicktime plug in.

i'm running FCP 6.0.4 8 core 3ghz mac with 6mb ram. latest version of quicktime the media is n a g-raid 1.5tb drive

any help much appreciated.

thanks

Peter

Since you say you're new to RED, it may be worth pointing out that the _P files are "reference files" and work only in conjunction with the ".R3D" files, i.e. you MUST NOT take them out the folder that the .R3D is in.

hi thanks,

should I import the _m files instead?

cheers

Did a test this morning with 7.5 quicktime and no issues with any of the proxies crashing (running similar hardware), so it may be a 7.5.5 issue. I would try testing all the proxies on your timeline and see whicj works. So far, the reports on 7.5.5 have been positive.

What are your timelimes setup as; Redcode, ProRes, etc.?

The _P, _M, _H and _F files are all "reference files" and differ only in terms of resolution. The more resolution you use, the slower the editing will be.
The important thing is to remember that the reference files cannot work as standalones. They do need to be in the same directory as the corresponding .R3D file.

Have a look at my Clipfinder application (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18371). It will greatly simplify the import of reference files into FCP. The Help function in Clipfinder explains the details.

Good luck

As you might have read in my new post, I found a way to make it roll. (at least on my sys)

I found out that FCP crashed whenever the marker "hit" something "unRed" in the timeline while playing.
What FCP needed was some Redcode media to be in the timeline at all times when in redcode sequence.

So I imported 10s of black generated by the camera and put at the bottom video track of the sequence...

It made it roll. But I still can´t render or do anything "funny" in my RedCode sequence, or FCP will crash without warning...

Hmmm....I've never encountered problems with FCP crashing with proxies in the timeline, even with DVCPRO/100 footage in the mix. But then again, I've been editing in ProRes HQ sequences lately.

Hi hans,

thanks for your clipfinder app. its amazing. thanks so much for putting it together. are you a developer or are you a film maker or both?

I've tried to deit using redcode. When I set my timeline up using the redcode codec, when i import the rushes onto the timeline its says the clip properties and sequence seetings don't match. so i click yes to match and this drops in the media on the timeline with nothing needed to render. yet when i check the sequence settings it has changed the settings to apple pro res. no matter how many times i try and change it it still goes back to apple pro res. then it crashes.

i'm now using pro res timeline using orange line at top.

i've also tried a test to conform using red alert but it says it can't find red line yet it is installed with red alert??

just a few obstacles.

thanks for all your help on this

cheers

Peter

Peter,

Thank you for your kind words.

From my experience, having to switch the sequence settings to Apple ProRes and living with the orange line is normal.

I must admit I have no idea what the RedCode setting is for.

As for REDAlert not finding REDline, REDline should indeed be installed with REDAlert. Try a reinstall of REDAlert 3.50 and check in "/usr/sbin/" (use "Go to Folder..." in Finder), if there is "REDline" program.

I have successfully generated output from reference file proxies in FCP, so this should be possible.

Do not hesitate to mail me if you need more help.
We'll make this work, I'm sure.

Cheers,
Hans

I had a horrible experience with the _P files. It plain just did not work. FCP crushed every 3 minutes, and always when the timeline was empty. I think there is a bug there in the Quicktime RED plugin.

I switched the whole project to the _M files.
I also replaces SPACES with UNDERSCORE in the filepaths.

Now I can edit even on a MacBook or Macmini without trouble again.
Mixing footage with other codecs results in less stability, but I do not need to do that.

Also, look at this hint, regarding creating quick looks for the proxyedit:

thanks

thanks

Hi Hans

thanks for all your info will try reinstalling red alert. also do you know the exact frame size of red footage. when i have imported into an apple pro res time line it give me a 4 x 3 output not true 16-9 on the viewer side of fcp. so when i export into compressor it shows the full frame 16-9 footage within a 4 x 3 box with black bars above and below the footage.

thanks

Peter

Hi hans,

i'm trying to conform using clip finder. but when i run automator as per the help menu it comes up with the message unable to find volume hard drive - saying it can't find the hard drive with the original rushes on. Yet the hard drive is there and i haven't changed any of the file names. any tips to get me past this ?

cheers Peter
