  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCP / Color Workflow Question

Got it to work! I found the render folders (the numbered ones that Color creates) and nothing was in there. I checked all my files and settings within Color and was having a problem with my directories. I started over and got it working.

Thanks.

The significant problem I see with all these workflows is the following: Color then uses "half res" debayering rather than "full res and then scale", this seemed to have a significant effect on image sharpness and noise when I tested sample stills out of redalert/redcine etc.

What is the best way to get 2K out of Color but using the technical advantages of full resolution debayering and intelligent resizing?
Correct. Also the only way for now to use the new color science in Apple Color is to transcode to another codec. On my macpro with clipfinder the transcoding for the offline to 1k high prores is faster then realtime and for the 2k online you can transcode only the clips that you used for editing.

Color will not render the r3d files

Color will not render the r3d files

I'm using a ProRes offline, clipfinder to 2k r3d workflow. I send to Color for grading with all that nice raw data. Then when I add everything to the render cue, the render cancels.

I have a few ProRes 422 files in there, self-contained quicktimes from After Effects, and they render fine, but the r3d files won't render out. Has anyone else run into this?

Did you send the proxy or the r3d to Color? With Clipfinder you have to replace your offline prores with H or M proxies and then send to Color.

The really weird thing is that it did work in the past. I opened up an old project that worked, but now it doesn't. Won't render. I'm flummoxed.

OK, get this -- I tried a pro app update, and it actually worked. Color 1.5 is now rendering r3d files, at least in one project.

Hello!
So, just to get this straight in my head:

-Drag and Drop QT Proxies (Typically M) into the FCP timeline. Edit.
-Prepare for Color by removing transitions, rendering/baking clips that have effects laid in, and cleaning up tracks
-"SEND TO COLOR"
-Color imports the sequence as XML and accesses the R3D files
-Use the RED Room tab and correct the meta data
-Render out of Color as DPX or ProRes HQ
-Insert back into FCP

So, If I work with the proxies on a sequence and send it to color, COLOR automatically goes to the original R3D with all the RAW information to work on?

Thanks in advance!

Yes. But read about Colorfixer if any of your clips are spanned (i.e. are longer than 2 GB).
