Hey all,
Just cut a 15 min indie short w Red and FCP Studio 2. Cut on Intel Duel core 3ghz. Not ideal but had zero problems. Opted to cut native redcine for two reasons. One I had six hours of footage and transfer to to Pro-res would have taken way too long. Two am a little wary of Pro-res quality.

About to go into Color correction and right now Apple Color is my only option.

This is what I'm hoping to achieve out of my project: A stunningly beautiful DVD, and stunningly beautiful HD-CAM master. These are the two formats required by the film-festivals that we are submitting to.

That aside let me just say I am bit disappointed with the Crimson workflow. Now I am stating that opinion based as an independent filmmaker with fewer resources. But having to pay for crimson is a little sucky to me. Its kind of like renting this cool new car and having to pay $200 extra dollars for a steering wheel. No offense to the Crimson folks. I think they really stepped up to provide a solution and did a fine job. However I feel this is a problem that should have been addressed by the Red-camera people.

Did you ever hard Panavision giving you software to process your films or scan it for you?

I disagree.

For a small film maker you should have rent a economy or even mid size car. It's like renting a luxury cars then complain that it only take super unleaded gas.

2K-4K has always been for the high end.

You are really lucky that's it's within reach.

We shot full length features on the DVX100. There was no software from Panasonic.

Color is a great app that used to cost thousands.

Now, back to your problems.

Prores is fine for what you do, DPX is better.

They are both options with will work in color.

Crimson still need some work.

518,400 frames does not take that long to convert to Prores.

Just do half res at 720p then use crimson.

Give it a try, it's much better than editing with the proxies.

Trust me.

Excuse my ignorance, but how do you import a DPX sequence in Color ?
Each time i try, i import only the first frame...

Gluetools software, which allows dpx seqs. to be opened in Quicktime.

or Aja QuickTimetoDPX reference translator.

It is common to send dpx to Color after the R3d has been onlined from pro RES or dv. its harder to work with the reference frames. If your goal is HD Broadcast, 10bit uncompressed is a Better option than dpx. Going dpx is always better. But for tv its almost too much for too little gain.

I've used the AJA DPX to QT Translator, it works...and it looks good and faithfull to what i saw in REDCINE, until you export AJA 10 bit Linear codec from Color...

...then the output AJA 10 bit file from Color crushes black level like crazy. (ar least on a Mac)

...so maybe i would have the same problem using DPX input in Color...the problem seems to come from Color' output...

Maybe i'm doing something wrong.

At the RED NAB Booth Michael Cioni was using RED raw files in Apple Color with a free (upcoming) plug-in. That was the day that RED released the FCP pro-res plug-in, and said the plug in for Color was next. Does anyone know what happened to that? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Only Apple knows when that will come – and they never tell anyone before it's finished.
But you can get remarkably good quality with a ProRes HQ only workflow if you do a first light with RedAlert and then do final touches in Color (as it was called before…).

dpx is logarithmic, tif is linear

Use AJA 10 bit log Uncompressed,

I almost would say if you dont have Glue Tools then you need to stay in 10 bit Log. The Translator works but kills time on a real workflow.

dpx is logarithmic, tif is linear

DPX is a file format that contains image data. That data can be in whatever format you want. There is a header flag that can be set to indicate log data, but the information can be log or linear regardless of how the flag is set. Tiff files can also be linear or log, the file format itself just holds image data. One needs to also differentiate between true linear data, and video-gamma images. They are not the same thing.

Ignorance or not, DPX always work on my color system.

Remember Color wasn't always an Apple product.

I do have gluetools, but color doesn't need it.

Try it.

Export some dpx out of RR.

Double click on it in Color file browser.

I'm wishing that Color takes Cineform in the near future.

Sorry guys,
you suggest to go to DPX Log when he wants to do finish for DVD and HDCam (Linear) ?

Shouldn't he stay linear all the process?

Thanks
